Alpha Knight’s Cursed Mate

NIRVANA

“I’m going to Italy, but I’ll be back on Tuesday. You have everything you need, and please don’t burn my house down. Call the second number on that phone if there’s an emergency.”

“Who’s number is this?”

“Just in case of emergency.”

I shrugged. “Three days, huh? You miss the Lycan King.”

“Don’t ever attempt to get out of this house.” She retained her calm demeanor and looked at me as if she read my mind that I might try.

“How could I? You blocked every hole in this house with your mojo.” I rolled my eyes. “Is there a trigger or something-”

“What did I just tell you?” She sounded more like a mother than a witch who saved my life many times than I could count. “The study is open. I suggest you read books, but don’t touch the Grimoire.”

“Why not?”

Irritated with my inquiry, she shook her head.

“I know I’m a pain in your ass, but my mother was a witch. Maybe something inside my brain can make a certain spell work.”

“Don’t even try. I’ll see you soon.” That was it. She had just walked into the portal, and now she was gone, leaving me alone in her house to die of boredom.

“Gosh, I missed Knight.”

She had TV and Netflix, but I was bored for the last three days. I talked to Knight every night, but it was much different than being with him. We almost had phone sex until I remembered Zarah could probably hear me.

I missed my mate, my freedom, my friends, Kailin, and everyone at the vineyards.

I watched a series about a group of delinquent kids born in space and dropped to Earth to see if the air was already breathable. I finished Episode twelve, and when a particular character pissed me off, I turned it off and went to read something in the study.

There were some fiction books, but primarily old books from Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Herman Melville. There were self-help and meditation books and a book about mystical creatures.

I walked out of the study. If she allowed me to read a book about witchcraft, it might interest me, but that would be as dangerous as walking into the darkness without knowing what was in there.

The problem with being in this house was that I was not even allowed to order pizza or Chinese food.

Her shield was up, and my gift would never work around here. I went into my room and lay in bed. I still have six hours to wait to talk to Knight again.

I must have fallen asleep. I got up, put the red fluffy slippers on, grabbed the phone on the nightstand, and went to the kitchen to get something to drink before I could talk to Knight. Until I felt the whole house was shaking.

“What the fuck?” I looked up at the ceiling, and my heart pounded so hard as I held to something sturdy in the kitchen. “An earthquake? Seriously?”

“Shit.” This happened when Zarah was not around. Great. The only person who could save, and she was not here.

Things around me began shaking, and I watched the knife holder move from its place. I was scared that it might fall on me. Ducking my head, I crawled down and hid under the table.

The shaking didn’t stop, and there was no hope, even if I could not scream for help. I was sure nobody could hear me.

Whether this earthquake was a natural calamity or a magical one, it terrified the living shit out of me. I couldn’t remember the last time I experienced an earthquake, probably never. And it hadn’t stopped. Instead, it had gotten even stronger.

The cupboard doors were slamming, and glasses fell and shattered. Things kept falling. I felt the deep vibration and the rumbling power against the floor like the ground underneath was about to tear in two, and the high-pitched ear-splitting sound pierced- the pressure rippled like an implosion, making my ear bleed.

“Zarah, help, please?” I started panting, tears sprung in my eyes.

I waited a few moments until she came through the portal, but the result disappointed me-Zarah did not appear when I needed her the most, and I was left alone until the house crashed down on me.

I withdrew a deep breath, closed my eyes, and blocked the sound and shaking around me until a shrilling, ear-shattering sound of tires startled me. As adrenaline rushed in my blood, I protected myself with my arms, curled into a bowl, and waited for the impact that didn’t happen.

There was a moment of surreal silence until murmurs and voices reached my ears.

“Hey, are you okay?” I heard a woman’s voice and felt a hand on my shoulder that frightened me, pulse still ringing in my ears.

With wide eyes, I sucked in a breath as I stared at her, my arms lifted, protecting myself. She was a few years older than me, with dark skin and curly hair, and her eyes looked shocked and confused.

“Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

My gaze shifted to an angry black man glaring down at me. Scrambling, I got up on my feet despite my knees still being weak.

One thing I noticed was that my mind still worked despite what I had just been through, and I was about to be run over by a car.

“You’re lucky I did not hit you, bitch.” The man spat out before he walked towards the car, just at least two steps before it crushed me.

“Hey. Give her a break,” said the woman who came to help. “Come with me.”

I had no choice but to walk with her out of the street. I looked around, and yes, I was in the busy street- just the nightmare I avoided. I had a premature jump, and it almost killed me.

“Where are we?” My voice shook, seemingly sounding foreign to me.

She inspected me from head to toe and started throwing a bunch of questions, “Are you okay? What happened to you? You’re disoriented. You don’t look like you’re from around here. And how did you get in the middle of the street? Thank God you didn’t get hurt.”

I looked at her, swallowing, still shaken up. “I don’t know.”

“Are you okay? Can I call you a cab or someone to come and pick you up? I can’t stay here with you. I’m sorry, but I have to go to work.”

“I’m good, thanks.” I gave her a reassuring smile. “Thank you.”

“No problem. If you feel disoriented again, call 911. And you’re in the Bronx.”

I stared at her in shock. “Bronx?”

“Yes. I don’t know your deal, but please, stay off the street.” She chuckled before she left.

I picked up the phone from my pocket and dialed the number Zarah told me to call in an emergency.

“Who’s this?” said the man from the other line.

“Who’s this? I asked back in confusion.

“Hey. Don’t call this line again.”

An intense emotion stirred something inside me, and I wanted to cry. I dialed that number again, and it was answered immediately. Before he could speak, I talked first, “Zarah told me to call if there’s an emergency. And this is an emergency, jackass.”

“Nirvana?”

I froze in shock and fear. “Who the fuck is this?”

“Hey, calm down, honey. What’s wrong? Where are you?”

“I’m lost.” My chin began trembling. I was so terrified, and I didn’t know what to do.

“What do you mean you’re lost?”

“Who the hell are you?” I yelled over the phone. I was still pretty shaking from the earthquake and just ended up in the Bronx.

This was getting insane, and I was losing my shit standing on the sidewalk, alone with my red slippers, no money, nothing. I was grateful I was wearing a shirt and jeans before that terrifying earthquake shook the entire house.

“It’s Kain, honey. We’ve met, and you can trust me. Tell me what happened?”

“Kain?”

“Yes. It’s me. We met in Inverness.”Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.

“Yeah, I remember. First, come and pick me up at the Bronx.”

“What in the hell are you doing there?”

“Please, hurry up. I can’t stay here and don’t know where else to go.” I looked at the sign. “I’m at Fordham?”

“Find a restaurant or a diner. I’m here in Washington Street. I’ll be there in forty minutes.”

Forty minutes was long. I couldn’t enter a restaurant with my clothes, looking like a homeless in red slippers, and I didn’t know where to find a diner, considering I only had a burner phone.

I walked away as some scary-looking guys stood beside me. I could easily knock them down if they tried something stupid, but I had enough trouble. I couldn’t get the council’s attention.

I constantly checked my phone for calls and the time. I felt like I’d been walking around for eternity, but it was only fifteen minutes ago. I found an empty spot on the sidewalk and sat there, contemplating how my life turned upside down.

My life months ago was good. I couldn’t call it perfect, but it was less complicated. No one wanted me dead, no one came after me, no one put a bounty on my head, and I was good with traveling long flights or driving for hours to get to a destination.

Having an ability was not all good benefits- it came with downsides.

My life turned shitty the second I learned about my family’s secrets, and I was starting to lose my mind.
