Chapter 1956
She had never seen Fitch so vulnerable before.
Fitch was always the epitome of pride and cold detachment, especially towards women, never showing a hint of mercy.
But here he was, collapsed beside her, silently breaking apart.
Zoey tried to pull her hand away, but his grip was unyielding.
"I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry, Zoey."
"Honey, I'm sorry."
He kept apologizing, holding onto her hand as if letting go was not an option.
Zoey was just too exhausted. She had lost track of how many times he had said sorry or how long he had been crying.
Her eyes stung, maybe from the harsh lighting, so she closed them again, quickly drifting off to sleep.
When she awoke, Fitch was still by her side, but now asleep.
The doctor was there, changing her bandages, and when he saw her attempt to free her hand, he quickly intervened.
"Mr. Haskins hasn't rested for four days. Let him sleep a bit longer."
Blinking in surprise, Zoey listened as the doctor continued.
"Four days and nights, without a wink of sleep. He'd collapse if he pushed any further. Let him sleep; he's genuinely worried about you."
Not sure what to respond, Zoey, too tired herself and nursing a headache, just nodded.
The doctor, having finished with the bandages and checked her condition, assured her she was going to be fine before leaving with his tray. Now, it was just Zoey and Fitch.
Fitch was truly exhausted, still deep in slumber.
Zoey gazed out the window, where the sunset painted the sky, its warm glow filling the room.
She closed her eyes once more, losing track of time until she heard Fitch's voice.
"Mommy's still resting, don't wake her."
"Is mommy okay now?"
"Not yet, we need to stay in the hospital for a couple more weeks."

Then, a small hand took hers, placing something in her palm.
It must have been a piece of candy.
"Mommy, get well soon."
Her heart felt a sudden pang, and she swallowed hard, slipping back into sleep.
When she woke up again, it was the next afternoon.
Feeling much stronger, she tried to sit up, only for Fitch to support her.
Her body stiffened, and she looked away, "I can do it myself."
Fitch, eyes downcast, silently hooked her fingertips, not saying a word.

ready.
His eyes still sported red veins, but he seemed more alert.
Zoey looked down, hands clutching the blanket, remaining silent.
That's when Nolan walked in, her eyes widening as they fixed on the child.
Nolan moved to the other side of the bed, her hand with a face of concern, his eyes also

The pain Zoey felt was immediate and intense, a sharp ache in her heart.
The sight of her family, both big and small, by her bedside was overwhelming. Unable to eat, Nolan's tears started to fall silently, his sobs heart-wrenching.
She quickly opened her mouth, taking a few more bites.
"Don't cry, Nolan, I'm eating, see?"
"Cough, cough, cough."
She choked on her haste, and Fitch promptly patted her back.
After finishing half the bowl, her stomach felt much better.
Nolan, still holding her hand, placed another piece of candy in it. "Mommy, eat."
