Tobias' tone grew cold. “Why should you care about whether people believe you're innocent or not?”

Skylar was taken aback. That's right. Why should I?

“I'm such a huge thorn in her side that she revels in my misery. Perhaps my existence is a mistake to

her.”

“What are you going to do about it?” Tobias asked. “Just allow yourself to be stepped on?”

Skylar, who was lost in thought, was unable to offer a solution.

“I don't know, that's why I'm asking you what else I could do aside from taking it lying down.” NôvelDrama.Org holds text © rights.

Tobias didn't want Skylar to do anything. He asked, ”Is your father fond of Avery?”

Skylar nodded. Avery grew up with an abundance of fatherly love. No matter how busy he was during

her childhood, he would always find the time to drop her at school every morning.

Back then, Skylar thought that her father was selfish to have neglected her after having his new family.

Tobias lit another cigarette. The dense smoke hid his expression from view.

“I'm sure there's something else going on beneath the surface,” he said suddenly with a laugh. “I know

you think that Thomas is fond of Avery, but if he had to make a choice between his wellbeing and that

beloved daughter of his, what would he choose?”

Skylar raised her brows in confusion.

“He would choose his daughter,” she answered firmly. “Money comes easily to him. Besides, Avery has

been raised as a princess for too long for him to change his mind now.”

Tobias must think that I'm losing hope. After all, he's more pragmatic than I am.

The venue of Thomas' birthday party was already crowded with guests when Skylar arrived. Irene, who

was recently divorced from Thomas, was nowhere to be seen.

When Thomas saw Skylar cross the threshold, he hastened over to greet his daughter. “Isn't Tobias

coming today?” he asked, looking around.

“He's a little busy to make it today, and he sends his regards.”

Thomas did not attempt to conceal his disappointment at the news.

Although her father's expression did not slip past her notice, Skylar was not aware that Thomas' true

motive for inviting her was to see Tobias and ask for his help.

Colleen, with Avery standing on her right, waved Skylar over. “Your father is lucky to have such

beautiful daughters.”

Avery cast Skylar a scornful glare. “You flatter me, Grandma. I'm nowhere near as beautiful as Skylar.

She's a harlot, you know. She bewitches the hearts of men just by walking into a room.”

Colleen turned to her. “How could you speak to your sister like that, Avery? That's not a very nice word

to use.”

Avery giggled. “Why not, Grandma? You have no idea how many suitors Skylar has. Just look at how

long she and Tobias have remained together. He is a man who can have any woman he wants.

Imagine how good Skylar must be to be able to keep him around this entire time. I hope she knows that

I'm saying all of this for her own good so she can repent and make better decisions while she still has

time.”

Skylar smiled in the face of her sister's disparaging comments. “We haven't seen each other in a while,

Avery. Why don't we go over there for a chat about making decisions about the future?”

Colleen was suddenly summoned over by a friend, leaving Skylar and Avery behind.
