Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared)

Chapter 964

Chapter 964

A gust of night wind swept through, tousling Agnes' hair into a playful disarray.

With a casual flick of her hand, she added an unintended allure to her stance as she took a couple of steps towards Jared.

Then, with a light chuckle, she teased, “If we’re talking about blurred lines, Mr. Whitfield, you’d surely top the list. Whisking me away from a wedding ceremony in full view of everyone, weren't you worried about the so-called ambiguity?”

Jared's expression remained cool and detached.

He seldom saw Agnes like this.

The wine had painted her cheeks a flush not normal for her, and her eyes shone bright, like stars in the night sky.

Ordinarily, she had an air of innocence about her, but at that moment, there was an added hint of seduction.

Draped in a crimson chiffon evening gown, her bare shoulders and slender silhouette were delicately hugged by the thin fabric, her ankles a silent siren call.

Agnes had drawn close enough for him to catch the faint aroma of red wine on her.

She looked up at him, her expression a mix of innocence and enchantment.

Suddenly, Jared snorted, his voice husky with restrained emotion, “Then let me show you what real ambiguity looks like.”

Without another word, he pulled her close and kissed her deeply.

Agnes was well aware that it wasn't right, but she couldn't help but give in. When sober, she could have pushed Jared away, but now, with the wine warming her veins, she couldn't feign confusion—it was desire, pure and simple.

Sometimes, that's just how people are—knowing full well they're heading for a fall, yet unable to stop themselves from tumbling down.

The rules she'd lived by seemed to fall away.

Yet, as she drew closer to Jared, her heart grew heavier.

She couldn't disregard her own principles, not even under the influence.

Not even with the longing to lose herself just this once.

But it wasn't to be.

Agnes started to struggle, pushing against Jared's chest with all her might, but her strength was no match for a man lost in his desires.

Jared caught her wrists, pinning them behind her back as he pressed her against the cold rooftop railing.

The barrier was only waist-high, and as Agnes leaned backward, her peripheral vision caught the skyscrapers below, their lights like distant fireflies.

The sensation was akin to being pushed to the edge of a cliff, ready to fall and shatter on impact.

Ironically, this was much like her feelings about returning to Jared's side.

His passion was often too intense, overwhelming, yet at times, it seemed wrapped in a cold armor, untouchable and chilling to the touch.

Agnes couldn't fathom him.

Often, she felt suspended on a precipice, ready to fall and break if she let go, but holding on was exhausting to the core.

She couldn't push this man away, but just as she was about to give up, a force intervened, pulling them apart.

There stood Ryder, his eyes icy and stern.

Jared seemed momentarily dazed, taking a punch that sent him reeling back a few steps, clutching at his chest.
