Because of the anaesthesia, Nathael hadn’t awoken immediately and was transferred to the ICU.

Alex saw Maggie’s call come through but didn’t know how to respond, so he chose not to answer.

After leaving the ICU, Nathael gradually woke up and was finally out of danger.

“Mr. Harris, Ms. Adain has called several times, probably to ask about you, Alex reported, adjusting Nathael’s bed slightly.

Nathael frowned and commanded, “Give me the phone.”

Right then, Maggie’s recent message came in.

Hearing his voice, Maggie’s worried heart finally settled. Her lips pursed slightly, and tears welled up in her

eyes.

“Maggie?” Nathael swallowed, his voice revealing a tinge of anxiety.

Maggie looked down. Maggie hid the tears that were welling–up in her eyes. She grumbled. “I thought you had moved on so quickly!”

Nathael paused, then solemnly replied, “No, there won’t be anyone new.

There was no one in the past and no other woman in the future.

It was always hers.

“So, why were you unreachable for so long?” Maggie wrapped herself in a coat and stepped onto the balcony to continue their conversation.

She didn’t truly blame him; it was just creeping unease and fear that she couldn’t express.

“The adversary created some complications; it took a little extra time,” he explained with a warm voice through the headset. Finding that the sound came from the other end was oddly satisfying.

Maggie remained silent for a long time. Nathael sensed a shift in the atmosphere and instinctively straightened up. “Maggie, are you angry?” he asked.

She wrapped her coat tighter around her and sniffled as she spoke, “Where are you? I’ll come to you.”

She was n

never a believer in the adage that separation sweetens romance; she found herself just this once, longing to act crazy for him.

She wanted to see him, regardless of the late hour or the distance across the city she might have to endure before setting out alone for the airport.

Despite this, she still wanted to see him and embraced him.

It seemed the only way to calm the panic and unrest within her heart.

Nathael swallowed slightly as He said in a low voice, “I’m not in Misk City.”

Maggie’s footsteps slowed, her gait tinged with disappointment. Was he already gone?

It was a little regrettable.

“I have Nolan drive you in the morning: he’s going back to the country for business anyway. I’ll send him to accompany you, Nathael said gently, with an undertone of coaxing.

Maggie’s mood was naturally soured by the missed encounter.

She carelessly played with the buttons on her clothing and said indifferently, “A man or a woman? Are you that trusting? Aren’t you worried about what might happen when a man and woman are alone together?”

“Maggie Adam!” His temples pulsated with a rhythmic throb as his blood pressure soared.

She had the maddening skill of driving him to the brink with just a few words.

His tone grew stern, a warning underlying his words. Yet Maggie pursed her lips. She finally conceded and said. “I know; I’ll wait patiently for your return.”

Hearing this, a child–like joy bloomed on Nathael’s face, the kind that comes with the first melt of ice or the revived of spring, like a brilliant ray of sunlight piercing through the early dawn, heralding a new beginning filled with beauty and hope.

She would wait for him.

It turns out that one day she will be willing to wait for him.

Alex watched the scene unfold. His thoughts are complex.

For all these years, he had never seen Nathael so genuinely happy. He hoped that Maggie was worth it.

Before Nathael could voice his thoughts, Maggie murmured, “But don’t make me wait too long. I’m not known for my patience, and if someone else treats me well, I might just wander off with them.

Nathael’s gaze darkened, his presence becoming ominous. “I dare anyone to try.”

Maggie laughed softly. “Nathael, I kind of miss you.”

Though they had parted ways only recently, Maggie felt like an eternity.

Nathael’s Adam’s apple moved again; if only his injury hadn’t been so severe, he wanted to rush to her side and hold her in his arms.

“Have you sorted out the trouble? How’s it going?” Maggie shifted the topic.

“It’s temporarily settled,” Nathael replied in a gentle tone.

They continued to talk until Maggie was overcome by sleepiness, could barely keep her eyes open, and ended the call.

Meanwhile, Lucas had caught a ride home and went straight to his study to start tracking Nathael’s whereabouts for Maggie.

But Nathael was a tough one to pin down.

He seemed to have a background in counter–surveillance and evading surveillance cameras, and even on the rare occasions he was caught on film, it was usually just a glimpse of his profile or back, surrounded by his entourage.

On top of that, someone was helping him cover his tracks. Lucas spent the entire night on his task.

By early morning, he had finally located Nathael’s current position. At the same time, he uncovered photos of Nathael, bloodied and lying amidst the ruins.

“Damn, the guy’s a survivor! Can anyone survive after losing that much blood?”

Lucas muttered to himself while sending the photos and Nathael’s location to Maggie’s phone.
