Part 32 # Tragic Accident
Lara was shocked by Bi Yani’s words. How could she think like that!
“Bi Yani, what are you saying?” Lara shook her shoulders. Tears welled up in Bi Yani’s wrinkled face as she wept for her husband, who was being dragged to the police station.
“No! Don’t take my husband!” Bi Yani screamed, chasing after the officers on duty.
Bi Yani’s husband grinned while pleading to be released. He promised not to repeat his actions and to treat his wife well.
“Sir, please let me go! My wife is crying over there!” Bi Yani’s husband shouted as he squirmed. His frail body writhed, pleading to be released so he could hug his wife, who was experiencing psychological trauma.
“You’re insane! Not possible!” The officer firmly refused to release Bi Yani’s husband just like that.
A commotion began. Neighbors flocked to Bi Yani’s house, surrounded by police patrol cars. Lara could hear the shouts of curious residents blaming Bi Yani’s husband, who often caused trouble.
“Just arrest him, Officer! A man who likes to beat his wife!” shouted one resident wearing a sleeveless shirt and rolled-up sarong. Apparently, Bi Yani’s neighbors knew that such violence often occurred.
“Move!” The police officer pushed Bi Yani’s husband’s body, which continued to resist and refused to go to the police station. He kept shouting that what he did was just a mistake and he wouldn’t do it again. However, the officer remained unmoved and still arrested him for questioning.
“No! Husband!” Bi Yani screamed. Lara hugged her and made her realize that her husband was evil. “He must be imprisoned, Bi Yani! It can’t be allowed!” Lara shouted just as loudly. However, Bi Yani kept resisting. She even pushed Lara, but Andre caught her.
“Ugh….” There was pain in Lara’s stomach as she almost fell.
“Are you okay?” Andre asked with a worried expression. Lara could see it clearly from his eyes and his trembling hands.
“Please, go after Bi Yani! I’m fine,” Lara said, trying to stand up. However, Andre told her to sit down and rest. “Let me handle everything. You just need to stay here, understand?”
Lara nodded.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
She didn’t know why, but she obeyed him so much. But if it weren’t for Andre, Bi Yani’s husband would never have received the appropriate punishment for his actions.
Andre ran outside, chasing after Bi Yani, who was seen pulling her husband to free him from the grip of the officers. The atmosphere became more heated and the cheers of the residents erupted!
“A man like that should be arrested!”
“Just throw him in jail so he learns his lesson!”
The atmosphere grew hotter outside Bi Yani’s house. The shouts of justice-demanding residents filled the air, and the jeers condemning Bi Yani’s husband made the situation even more uncontrollable. Meanwhile, Lara was still sitting there, feeling the pain in her stomach from the push earlier.
“Will Bi Yani be able to accept this reality?” Lara muttered to herself, trying to calm her anxious feelings. She still couldn’t understand how a wife could be so strong in defending her husband who clearly had been violent towards her.
Meanwhile, Andre struggled to catch Bi Yani, who was desperately trying to free her husband from the police’s grip. Bi Yani’s screams mixed with the cheers and curses from the surrounding residents. That’s when Bi Yani’s mother emerged from the crowd.
With unsteady steps and a face full of worry, Bi Yani’s mother approached the commotion in front of her house. Seeing her daughter crawling and sobbing, her mother’s expression immediately turned sad and angry.
“My-my daughter ….” Bi Yani’s mother whispered, holding her daughter’s bruised face. “How did this happen?” she asked, unable to hold back her tears.
“M-mother ….” Bi Yani couldn’t speak. Perhaps, she didn’t expect her mother, who was in the village, to be in front of her house at this moment.
Bi Yani had once mentioned that her mother was in a village far from Jakarta. And she couldn’t come to Jakarta without anyone’s help. But what is this? Why is this family reunion so … tragic?
“My daughter … Astaghfirullah! My daughter….”
Upon hearing her mother’s lament, Bi Yani could only sob uncontrollably. She now let go of her husband’s shirt and prostrated herself at the wrinkled feet of her mother. “Forgive me, Mom. I’m sorry….”
The moment of meeting between the elderly mother and daughter was so touching. So much so that the residents, who were initially enraged, now fell silent. They let Bi Yani and her mother enjoy their togetherness amidst this painful episode.
Bi Yani immediately hugged her mother after the old woman lifted her body covered in gravel and dirt.
“My daughter. You should be happy, dear,” her mother murmured while stroking her child’s head. No matter how old, a child is still a child, and a mother… doesn’t care about any phase to pray for her child’s happiness.
Bi Yani seemed to realize that her happiness did not depend on her husband who often hurt her. She still had a mother who loved her unconditionally. Bi Yani was ashamed for being indifferent to herself, causing the elderly woman in her arms to cry endlessly.
“Damn!”
Meanwhile, Bi Yani’s husband still tried to revolt amidst the crowd. Accidentally, the lock from the officer loosened. The man immediately ran towards the crowd.
“Hey! Stop!”
The atmosphere became more tense as Bi Yani’s husband managed to break free from the officer’s grip. He ran quickly towards the crowd of residents still gathered around the house. Andre, who immediately realized what was happening, left Bi Yani and her mother to chase after the man.
“Stop!” Andre shouted, trying to chase Bi Yani’s husband who was getting farther away. The residents who witnessed this began to shout and run, avoiding the angry and confused man.
Bi Yani’s husband jumped over the neighbor’s fence, connecting the residence to the road. He tried to slip through the small alleys that divided the settlement to escape out of town.
The residents avoided him, no one wanted to get involved. They didn’t want to be a target of stray bullets if the officers finally carried out the criminal suppression procedure.
Andre continued to chase him, along with other police officers.
Unexpectedly, a car suddenly sped down the narrow street. Bi Yani’s husband, unaware of its direction, walked right in the middle of the road. The car tried to swerve, but it was too late. Bi Yani’s husband was hit hard, thrown several meters and fell helpless.
The honking of the car and the shouts of the residents filled the air. Everyone, including Andre, ran towards the scene. Bi Yani’s husband lay motionless, while the driver of the car got out with a frightened face.
“Da-damn it! Why did he run towards my car?” the driver shouted, trying to save himself.
Andre approached Bi Yani’s seriously injured husband. “Call an ambulance immediately!” he shouted to a resident holding a phone. Andre tried to provide first aid, but it was difficult. Bi Yani’s husband’s skull was cracked.
Meanwhile, Bi Yani, who suddenly emerged from the crowd, witnessed the tragic accident involving her husband. Her face, previously full of sadness, now turned pale.
“Hu-husband!” she screamed with deep sorrow. “Husband!” Bi Yani’s cries of grief matched the tragic death that befell her abusive husband.
Bi Yani’s husband was pronounced dead on the spot, after paramedics arrived and checked his absent pulse.
The punishment awaiting Bi Yani’s husband is the punishment of the hereafter. He was freed from the worldly punishment that threatened him. Lara didn’t know why, but her heart felt pain and refused to accept it. But this is the reality. At least, Bi Yani’s life can be a little easier now.
Who knows?
