Chapter 3311 The Pragmatic Elder
"Mr. Schafer, a man of great renown, yet his son turned out to be such a disappointment."
Without paying any further heed to Caleb's reaction, the elderly man shifted his eyes to Shawn. "And who might you be, behaving so-"
Before he could finish, Erasmus caught a glimpse of Matthew standing behind Shawn with a figurine in hand. His eyes widened in shock as if he had seen something far beyond his comprehension.
Once he confirmed what he saw, the old man's demeanor changed instantly. "Your actions are most admirable. Our young sir here has always been rebellious; to have him corrected by you two is nothing short of a blessing."
Bartholomew had always held Erasmus in high regard, but even with that respect, Erasmus knew he had to handle this situation carefully. No matter how powerful or wealthy the Schafer Family was, they didn't have the deep-rooted influence of the Mirren Family, who was feared by all in Dewsbury. Even they wouldn't dare openly provoke Matthew, the Summit Warden. The Schafer Family might be the richest in Dewsbury, but their foundations were fragile by comparison.
"Master Erasmus, he hit me!" Caleb, barely standing, stared at the elder in disbelief. As the heir of the Schafer Family, he couldn't believe what was happening. Not only had he been struck, but now even his family's trusted elder wasn't standing up for him.
"Shut up! When we get home, you'll be in for a beating!" Erasmus snapped, shooting a harsh glare at Caleb. This foolish boy did nothing but cause trouble day in and day out.Material © NôvelDrama.Org.
Bartholomew had taken extreme measures to lock Caleb inside the house, but somehow, the boy had still managed to escape and on top of that, offend the one person no one should cross, Matthew Larson, the Summit Warden. If the situation wasn't handled delicately, it could spell the end of the entire Schafer Family.
Shawn quirked a brow, gazing at the elder with amusement. "Looks like you know us."
"Your reputations precede you, Summit Warden Larson, Mr. Warde," Erasmus responded with a deferential nod.
Matthew's fame needed no
introduction. He was the Holy
Doctor of Cathay, the Martial League
President of Southaven and
Skargness, a Ground Force
Instructor, and the Prime Regent of Montiría. Any one of those titles would earn respect anywhere in the world. And Shawn had recently made headlines by chasing down fugitives across international waters, cementing his own fame.
"Summit Warden, we will compensate for the damage to this street tenfold and provide the best medical care to anyone injured. As for our young sir, we'll take him back and make sure he's properly disciplined. Will that be acceptable?" Erasmus asked, turning his gaze to Matthew, hopeful for a résolution.
Only a family as wealthy as the Schafers could afford to make such generous offers. All the elder wanted was to end this matter peacefully and drag Caleb back to Bartholomew before things got worse. "Pay for the damages and keep him in check, but he's not leaving with you," Matthew said as he stepped forward, addressing Erasmus.
"Summit Warden, he's just a rebellious kid who doesn't know any better. Isn't this a bit much?"
Matthew shook his head. "His potential is undeniable, but it's been left untapped. He could learn a great deal from me."
Earlier, Matthew had noticed Caleb's natural talent. Despite being knocked down by Shawn, Caleb had managed to get back up rather quickly-a sign of good physical potential, albeit unrefined. "I..." Erasmus hesitated, glancing at Caleb, who stood defiant like a rebellious teenager. Then, with a decisive nod, he agreed. "Very well, Summit Warden. We'll leave him in your care."
Without another word, the elderly
man turned and, with surprising strength, picked up both of Caleb's bodyguards-each weighing at least 200 pounds-and walked away leaving Caleb standing there completely bewildered.
Did Master Erasmus just... sell me out?
Just as he contemplated making a run for it, he caught sight of Shawn grinning wickedly at him.
