Chapter 418 Confession

Freya could naturally tell that Jamie was treating her with disrespect.

Nonetheless, she clenched her hands into fists, trying to calm herself down.

“Didn’t you say Edward was waiting outside? Can you let me go now?”

Jamie released her wrist and inadvertently felt her skin rubbing against his fingertips.

He unconsciously rubbed his fingertips together.

The two of them exited the room and made their way to the dining hall.

In the dining hall, Edward had already seated himself and was engaged in conversation with the maid.

“Frey doesn’t drink, so please remove the wine.”

The maid promptly complied and took away the wine.

When Freya entered the dining hall and saw Edward, the anger on her face immediately disappeared.

“Edward.”

His attention immediately turned to her, his eyes filled with a glimmer of radiance.

“Frey, you’re here.”

He stood up, prepared to pull out a chair for her.

Alas, she stopped him. “Just sit properly.”

After a few minutes, Jamie also made an appearance. He was wearing an inexpensive suit and had a respectful smile on his face. “Miss Kaufmann, Edward.”

Freya shot him a cold glance and averted her gaze.

Once Jamie took his seat, the atmosphere at the table became lively.

He continuously yet shamelessly expressed his gratitude to Freya despite being her jailer.

“If it weren’t for Miss Kaufmann, I wouldn’t know what to do with my brother.”

Freya picked up the juice next to her and took a sip, feeling that Jamie was intentionally

“Mr. Fraser, you’re exaggerating. Edward is like a brother to me. It doesn’t matter how severe his illness is. I will find a way to cure him.”

Jamie smiled. “Then, let me propose a toast to Miss Kaufmann.”

As he reached for his wine glass, he realized that there was no wine in front of her.

Edward explained, “She doesn’t drink, so I had her wine glass removed.”

Jamie’s smile deepened. “Then, let Miss Kaufmann have juice instead. I’ll still drink to that.”

His smooth demeanor made it seem as if he was still Mr. Fraser from the Kaufmann Group.

Freya regarded him with thinly veiled hostility, but she still picked up the juice and took a sip in order to keep Edward in the dark.

Due to his illness, Edward couldn’t consume alcohol either. Meanwhile, she would occasionally select some light dishes for him.

Edward struggled to pick up a piece of fish and placed it on her plate in response.

“Frey, have some fish.”

She quirked her lips into a smile. Regardless of the circumstances, Edward was still that cheerful and brilliant young man.

Still, she couldn’t help but lower her gaze in sadness when she thought about his terminal illness.

Cancer.

Life was truly unfair. Edward, who was such a kind young boy, was inflicted with ant incurable disease. On the other hand, Jamie, the leader of this malicious and terrifying. organization, was as healthy as a horse.

Midway through the meal, Edward clinked glasses with Jamie.

Once Edward placed the jug down, he lowered his gaze and said, “Freya, I have something to tell you.”

Jamie looked on with interest.

She put down her utensils and asked, “What do you want to say?”

Edward looked up at Freya, and there was a hint of depth in his cheerful eyes.

“Frey, to be honest, I’ve never truly considered you my sister.”

She was taken aback by this sudden topic. Nonetheless, she still patted his arm to comfort him, saying, “It’s okay.”

He frowned, knowing that she had misunderstood the implications behind his words.

“I never thought of you as a sister, but I was afraid you would drift further away from me if I didn’t. So, I decided to cling to you as a little brother.”

Edward spoke slowly, his gaze lowered.

Jamie, who was sitting across from them, felt inexplicably irritated upon hearing these words.

Freya furrowed her brow and inquired, “Edward, what are you saying?”

Edward closed his eyes before snapping them open as he declared resolutely, “Freya, I know my terminal illness can’t be cured. Someone like me should just quietly await the Grim. Reaper. However, I still want to be selfish for one last time.”

Edward looked

determined and clear as he said to her, “I don’t want to die with his gaze any regrets. Even though I’m living on borrowed time, I want you to know that I have feelings for you.”

The atmosphere at the dinner table fell into silence.

Freya gripped her utensils tightly as she stared at Edward in bewilderment.

He was three years younger than her, so she had never considered him in that way.

Edward pursed his lips as he continued, ” I’ve always liked you.” His hands were shaking as he kept going, “But, I’m afraid that if I confessed, you’d leave me. I know that you’ve always been decisive. So, I’m also aware that you’d distance yourself from me if you ever found out that I like you.”

Then, he inhaled deeply as he spoke, “I always thought that once I graduated from university, I’d grow to be more mature. I’ve even held onto that sliver of hope that as long as I made something of myself after graduation, I would be able to compete against Radley and your other suitors. Maybe, just maybe, you would finally be able to see me. Of course, that would only happen when I’m capable enough to stand by your side. But… I don’t have that chance anymore.”

She bit down on her lip harshly. Even though she was now aware of his feelings for her, she didn’t know how to respond.

“Edward…” she trailed off. Although this was probably Edward’s last moment, she couldn’t. find it in herself to lie to him.

Finally, she gave voice to her thoughts, saying in a strained tone, “I’ve always seen you as a little brother.”

Edward chuckled. “I know. That’s why I never bothered correcting you. I also know that I have no future. I shouldn’t have said anything; it only adds to your burden. But I guess my love for you isn’t deep enough. So, I still wanted to confess when I still can.”

Freya noticed that Edward hadn’t called her by her nickname after this.

Across from them, Jamie’s eyes were deep and mysterious.

He was aware of his brother’s hidden and profound love for her.

Jamie looked at her thoughtfully. Would it help his condition if she agreed to date Edward?

Meanwhile, Freya’s heart was in turmoil. It felt as if her own brother had suddenly confessed his feelings to her.

Yet, she didn’t want to discourage Edward either. So, she pondered her options for a moment before smiling and saying, “Edward, let’s focus on your recovery for now. We can discuss other matters later.”

Edward gazed at her. “I know I won’t get better. Can I address you as Freya from now on?”

He didn’t want to pass away as her brother.

She pursed her lips and replied after a brief pause, “Yes.”

Edward beamed. “Freya.”

A forced smile appeared on her face. “Yes.”

Jamie observed the two of them, his fingers tightly gripping the utensils.

He poured himself a glass of red wine and downed it in one gulp.

After merely five or six minutes, Freya was eating with her head down when she suddenly heard a loud noise from across the table.

She looked up at Jamie and noticed that he had one hand pressed on the table. His face was pale, and sweat was dripping from his forehead.
