| stood outside the door, my hand poised to knock. Even though my heart was racing, and my fists were clenched tight, | forced myself to take a deep breath and slow my

breathing.

| couldn't afford to lose control now, not when | needed to talk to Emily. | needed to be calm and reasonable if | wanted to make any progress. So, | gently rapped my knuckles against the door.

The door swung open, and | saw Emily’s face go from relaxed to shocked in a matter of seconds. “Kex? You are here?” she said, her voice trembling.

| smiled gently, hoping to put her at ease. “Yes, | am,” | said, stepping inside.

She closed the door behind me and locked it, an action that made me uneasy. | didn’t say anything as | pulled a chair over and sat down. The silence hung between us, heavy and awkward.

| cleared my throat and spoke, my voice coming out more forceful than | intended. “Emily,” | said, and she looked up at me, her eyes wide.

She was shaking, and I could see the fear in her eyes. | reached out and took her hand, the one that had been cut, and held it gently. “Did Nelly really do this to you?” | asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

She swallowed, her eyes flicking between me and the floor. “Yes,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“Emily,” | said, my voice low and serious. “You know how much | dislike lying. It’s something | can’t stand, and it’s something | won't tolerate from anyone, especially not you.” | paused, letting my words sink in. “I’m going to ask you one last time. Did Nelly do this to you?” | asked, and this time, | was met with silence.

It stretched on, long and tense, until | thought it would never end. “Emily,” | growled, and she flinched, her shoulders hunching up to her ears. She looked up at me, her eyes wide and afraid.

“No, she did not cut me,” she stammered.

I stood up abruptly, knocking over the chair | had been sitting in. | began pacing back and forth, my thoughts racing.

“I'm sorry, Kex,” she said, but | didn’t respond. | just kept pacing, my mind whirling.

“Kex, please,” she said, her voice pleading. | stopped pacing and turned to face her, my anger rising.

“Who cut you?” | demanded, my voice rising.

“| did it myself,” she said, her voice barely audible.

| felt a mixture of rage and confusion. Why would she do this to herself? | couldn’t understand.

| grabbed her shoulders and shook her, my emotions getting the better of me. “Why, Emily? Why would you go to such extremes? You know | would have sought justice for you, so why did you do this?”

As | shook her, | saw her eyes fill with tears, and my anger began to soften. Tears of my loved ones were my weakness, and | could never bear to see her cry. | released her and pulled her into a hug, and she began to so b against my chest.

“I'm sorry, Kex,” she said, her voice muf fled by my shirt. “I never meant to go to such extremes. | just...| don’t know what came over me.”

| felt a wave of compassion wash over me, and | held her close, stroking her hair. “It’s okay, Emily,” | said, my voice soft.

| held her until her s obs had quieted, and she sat back down, her eyes swollen and red. | took her hands in mine and looked her in the eye.

“What you did was wrong,” | said, my voice firm but gentle. “You made me hurt someone who didn’t deserve it, just because you thought I wouldn’t take your situation seriously. That's not the right way to go about things.”

She hung her head, her shoulders shaking. “I’m so sorry, Kex,” she whispered. “I didn’t mean to cause any harm. | just didn’t know what else to do.”

| looked at her, my resolve unwavering. “You will have to apologize to her,” | said. She stood up, her face contorted in shock. “What? No, Kex, | can’t do that!” she protested. “She hurt me first! Why should | apologize when I’m the one who was wronged?” These Automation Tools Might Surprise You

| sighed, knowing this was going to be difficult. “| understand that she hurt you, and that’s not okay. But you need to see the bigger picture here. What you did was wrong, and it could have had serious consequences. You have to take responsibility for your

actions.”

She looked at me, her eyes pleading. “Kex, I’m sorry, but | can’t do it. | just can’t.” | could see that she was truly distressed, and I wanted to help her, but | also knew that what she had done was wrong.

“| understand that this is hard for you,” | said. “But Nelly deserves an apology, and she needs to know that you're sorry for what you did. Can’t you see that what you did was wrong?”

She looked down at her feet, and | could see that she was torn. “I know, but...” she trailed

off.

“Fine, then,” | said. “You don’t have to apologize. | will pay for your sins.”

She looked at me, a mixture of confusion and relief on her face. “What will you do?”

she asked.

“You don’t need to know because what you did was wrong, and Nelly deserves an apology. I’m not going to force you to apologize, but | can’t just stand by and do nothing.”

“You don’t have to do this, Kex,” she said, and | could hear the sincerity in her voice. “You are just causing yourself unnecessary trouble.”

| smiled and shook my head. “It’s not unnecessary. What you did was wrong, and | can’t stand by and do nothing. Nelly deserves better.”

| bent down and kissed her forehead. “See you in the morning,” | said, and with that, | turned and left. As | walked away, | heard her voice calling my name, but | didn’t turn

back.

| couldn't help but feel let down by Emily. | never knew her to be the type to go to such extremes. It was so unlike her. Maybe | should have tried harder to understand her. But now it was too late, and | didn’t know what to do.

| made my way to Nelly’s room, my heart heavy with the knowledge of what had happened. | unlocked the door and stepped inside, taking in the sight of her fast asleep in her bed. | moved closer and pushed a strand of hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear. How could she sleep so soundly, even in pain?

Nelly makes me do things | have never done before. No one has ever dared to challenge me or deny me. But with her, it's different. She’s not afraid of me like everyone else. | don’t know what to make of it, and it’s driving me crazy.

What's wrong with me? | have never been so befuddled by a woman before. What is it about her that makes her so different? Is it because she’s not scared of me, or is there something more?
