Austin told Dominic which hotel he was currently staying at.

Dominic answered, “Please wait in the lobby momentarily. I will arrange for someone to pick you up.”

Austin raised his eyebrows and asked, “Right now? Has the interview been brought forward?”

Dominic explained, “No, the interview timing remains. Ms. Isabella instructed me to do this because she says that malicious people have made a big deal out of this hiring and countless people are watching. We’re worried that one of your competitors will get to you and make you unable to attend the interview tomorrow.

“So, to make sure every single interviewee attends as scheduled, Ms. Isabella has instructed me to welcome you to stay the night in the estate.

“You are the first to be called for a second interview, so naturally, you are the first to be invited for the stay. We’ll ensure that none of your food gets drugged or poisoned lest you get diarrhea or the sort.”

Austin was struck speechless, but he went along with it.

They were just hiring a private chef. Did they have to make such a big deal out of it?

Austin now knew how influential his future wife was.

“You must be careful, Mr. York. Previously, an applicant was followed by his competition when he ate out, who laced his food with laxatives and made him unable to attend his second interview, which is considered giving up.”

After another moment of speechlessness, Austin replied, “Thanks for the heads up. I’m currently at the cafe on the ground floor and will head over to the lobby to wait in a bit.”

Once Dominic hung up, Austin said to the Abbots, “Mr. and Ms. Abbot, I have to go back to my room to get something, so I’ll make a move first. Coffee’s on me.”

“Thank you, Mr. York. See you, then.”

Weston did not insist on paying the bill. Perhaps because he knew he had lost, he was in a bad mood.

Austin took his leave.

Once Austin was gone, Jovanne comforted her father. “Dad, Mr. York was very guarded, so what he said might not be trustworthy. Let’s wait a little longer. I’m sure they’ll call us back for the second interview.

“You’ve definitely been in this field longer than Mr. York has. He’s so young, too—he looks like he’s only a few years older than I am and you know my skill level. No matter how good he is, he can’t be that good.

“Don’t get discouraged, Dad.”

Weston took a bite of a pastry and said, “He’s the worst at making treats but still managed to get a callback, which means he’s a very capable chef.

“Don’t underestimate him because of his youth. Young people have a lot of potential.

“It’s also possible he’s just talented.”

Jovanne took two sips of her coffee before saying, “No matter how talented he is, he’s young. How many cuisines could he have tried? How many dishes does he actually know how to make?

“Even if he manages to get in this time, how long can he last? Everyone knows how picky of an eater Ms. Isabella is. She doesn’t just want something different every day, she also needs it to be perfect in every way.

“It’s easier said than done. I’ve done some research and the longest anyone’s worked as the O’Connors chef is six months. Two weeks is the shortest.”

Weston was silent, and then he said, “If I still don’t get it this time, I’ll give up and accept reality.

“I’m getting older too. No matter how I keep practicing, I don’t improve much, and I can’t keep it up anymore. You’re still young and can pick up where I left off. The next time there’s a cooking competition, I’ll help you sign up so you can gain more experience.”

Jovanne said optimistically, “Okay. Even if you can’t get it, and might not be able to call yourself the god of cooking, you’ll still be able to become a famous chef in the area with your skill right now.”

Weston smiled but stayed silent.

Jovanne continued, “Mr. York is really handsome though. Ms. Isabella might make an exception to hire him because of that. This is the first time I’ve seen such a handsome man in this line of work. He’d definitely go viral if he debuted in the entertainment industry.”
