Chapter 1220
Mila scoffed, "I knew it. That Kari is trouble. One minute she's with Nathan, and the next she's cozied up with Ronald, even got him to cut ties with the Malone family... What kind of witchcraft did she use?" Mila never had a soft spot for Kari, yet Nathan, bless his heart, was head over heels for her.
"Prepare a gift for Kari," she instructed. "Something to remind her of her place. She better not set her sights on anything that's not hers, especially not Nathan!"
Now that she's married, she should behave. If she as much as thinks about Nathan again, Mila was not going to let it slide.
At dinner, Samuel Jarvis found out Nathan was back.
"Finally came to your senses?" he asked, partly amused, partly relieved.
Nathan was his blood, after all. How could he not want him close by?
Yet Nathan had chosen to trail behind Isaac, content with being an assistant, never once considering taking over the family business. "Yes."
Mila didn't mention Kari's marriage, vaguely adding, "Honey, Nathan's grown now. Maybe it's time we talked about his role in the company?"
Mila had been waiting for Nathan's return, eager to keep him close.
Samuel glanced at his eldest son, Jacob: "Jacob, what do you think?"
Jacob, his son from his first marriage, had climbed the corporate ladder to become president. A hard man to please, especially where Mila was concerned, but he adored his half-brother Nathan.
"If he's willing, he can start from the bottom," Jacob said, sticking to his principles. "Just like everyone else in the family."
"That's not fair!"
Mila frowned. "Nathan is your blood brother. He should at least start from management..."
"What, you want him to jump straight to president?"
Jacob shot back, a steely glint in his eye. "Or maybe take my seat?"
Mila's face fell, but before she could retort, Samuel cut in.
"Jacob's right. Everyone starts from the bottom. No exceptions."
Mila was dissatisfied. How could her beloved son start from the bottom?
After dinner, Mila barged into Nathan's room: "Nathan?"
He had just woken up.
"How did you get in?"
"I've discussed it with your father. You're welcome to join the company."
"No need."
Nathan rummaged through his closet for some pajamas. "I'm not planning to join the company. I'm just here for a break."
The whole of Imperial City was buzzing about Kari and Ronald's wedding. He just wanted to escape the city, to avoid the whole affair. Once the break was over, he'd return to Imperial City.
Mila was fuming. "Nathan, Kari's married. What's left to hold onto?"
Nathan dropped the clothes he was holding. "How did you know about the wedding?"
Mila was nonchalant. "I checked. Right after breaking up with you, she hooked up with Ronald, even got him to leave the Malone family! It's good you broke up early. That Kind of woman would've brought nothing but trouble."
Nathan stood up abruptly, his voice cold. "Kari is not a bad woman."
"Mom!"
He faced her, serious. "We, the Jarvis family, wronged Kari. Instead of feeling guilty, you slander her. is this the 'manners' you pride yourself on?
"Nathan!"
Mila was livid.
Nathan didn't want to argue further. "Please leave. There's no need to discuss this anymore."
Mila, with a huff, left the room, slamming down the glass of milk she was holding. "You're thirty, Nathan. It's time to think about marriage. Kari is off the table. I'll find someone suitable for you." This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
"No need."
Nathan's refusal was cold. "I'm not considering marriage at the moment."
"You not getting married, while your brother's already got kids. How will you compete?" Mila regretted having such an unambitious son!
"Why should I compete with my brother?" Nathan was frustrated. "Please, just leave."
Mila left, dissatisfied.
Nathan, after showering and changing, saw Jacob waiting outside his room.
"Bro, when did you get here?"
