Chapter 99
Chapter 99
As she was thinking of this, her nails were embedded into the palms, leaving deep marks. Then she
looked coldly at the corner where Meredith was.
Shortly after Derek got contacted with the people outside, the repairmen arrived. They couldn't afford to
keep Derek being trapped in the elevator for so long, for they could be punished for that.
So, not long after, the elevator was good again.
The light slowly lit up. Derek glanced at Meredith who was in the corner. With fright, her face was very
pale; her normally red lips were now drained of blood; her hands were tightly covering her abdomen;
and her expression showed that she was very nervous.
Did she care so much about the baby?
Derek suddenly grew unspeakably irritable. Glancing at the two women, he maintained his manners
and said, "After you."
Meredith nodded and was about to walk out of the elevator when she went weak at the knees and
almost fell to the ground. Seeing this, Derek quickly lifted her up.
"Thank you. I didn't see the way,"
Meredith hurriedly thanked him. Perhaps because she was pregnant, she was no longer as resilient as
she used to be. Even the elevator blackout would make her extremely nervous.
However, Meredith was also a little surprised that Derek would take the initiative to help her. Didn't he
hate the baby in her womb?
"Be careful with yourself," Derek was upset. He was just acting subconsciously only to realize how
strange that was afterwards.
It had nothing to do with him even if she had a miscarriage and the illegitimate baby just died.
Nova saw there was something between the two of them and understood what was going on.
Not wanting to see Derek holding Meredith, Nova forced out a warm smile, "Since Meredith is not
feeling well, I'll help her back. Mr. Xavier, don't worry."
As she spoke, she went up and helped Meredith out of the elevator.
Meredith was a little surprised by Nova's enthusiasm at the moment, but having suffered a shock, she
was unwell with a tummy ache, so she did not refuse.
"Mr. Xavier seems to care a lot about you,"
Nova said as if she didn't mean it, but deep down she was being very jealous of Meredith.
"No, it's just... He probably saw my pale face and was afraid that something would happen to me. After
all, it would be bad for the company if something happened to staff there,"
Meredith quickly denied it, being afraid that Nova would misunderstand their relationship.
Saying nothing more, Nova helped Meredith to the place, "I am still learning the robes here, and hope
that I could learn from you."
Seeing she was being polite, Meredith nodded.
From then on, Nova went to Meredith whenever she was free.
Meredith knew best what it felt like to be ostracized in the workplace, so she spared no effort in helping
Nova adapt to her work.
After all, she was also a poor college student who needed a work-study program. Meredith was always
nice to people who were in the same difficult situation as she.
Soon the two of them got to know each other.
Friday, after work, Meredith was about to leave when Nova suddenly held her arm and said, "Meredith,
you've helped me a lot at work lately. I don't know how to thank you. My parents said they wanted to
invite you home for dinner. I wonder if you're free today."
Meredith hesitated.
"Just go to my house for a meal. They are all my families, so don't be shy."
After hearing Nova's words, Meredith was too embarrassed to refuse. After all, it was a gesture of
goodwill.
"All right, then. Hopefully, it won't cause you too much trouble."
Meredith called Derek, explained the situation, and followed Nova to her house.
There are four people in Nova's family and they lives in a quite humble neighborhood. The house was
not big at all, and it was even more crowded with her.
However, there was a sense of home. This simple feeling made Meredith feel more at ease.
As soon as they entered, Meredith received a warm welcome. Knowing that the senior who had helped
their daughter was coming to visit, they got up early and prepared a large table of dishes, waiting for
her arrival.
Nova's brother, Seth, stared at Meredith for a few moments. It was not until Meredith looked up and
smiled politely at him that he came back to his senses and his face turned red.
He was twenty-seven years old this year, and he didn't have a girlfriend yet. As soon as Meredith came
in, he thought she was really good-looking with special beauty.
Ever since she knew she was pregnant, Meredith had stopped putting on makeup and even stopped
applying lipstick. However, perhaps because she had a good appetite during her pregnancy and had a
balanced diet, she looked better with smoother skin and a brighter complexion.
The meal was a harmonious one. Apart from Meredith's inability to drink, everything went very well with
a lively family atmosphere around.
After dinner, Seth mysteriously pulled Nova to his room and asked about Meredith.
"Are you interested in her?"
Nova thought for a while and believed that it was good for her to fix the two up. During this period, she
tried to get close to Meredith mainly in order to find out her weakness and then used it as a stick to
beat her with.
However, Meredith was very careful in her work and usually went straight home after work. Nova really
couldn't find any flaws of her.
If her brother really won Meredith's heart, she wouldn't have to worry about something might happen
between Meredith and Derek, and besides she wouldn't have to take the risk of doing anything bad.
After all, Meredith was good to her, and she would feel guilty, if she did Meredith harm.
"She seems to be single. She is a sanitation worker in our company. If you like her, I will back you up."
Hearing that Meredith was a sanitation worker, Seth seemed to be a little upset, for he thought she,
with such good grace, was a lady from a decent family.
Nevertheless, thinking about Meredith's face, which was still pretty without makeup, and her curve, he
thought she was acceptable. Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
"Then do me a favor. When she becomes your sister-in-law, I will definitely give you a big red
envelope."
Nova happily agreed.
Meredith spoke with their parents for a while and then got up to leave. Nova said quickly, "Let my
brother give you a ride. He has a car. Taxis won't be available at this time."
Meredith wanted to refuse, but they insisted, so she agreed.
On the way, Seth kept showing off, saying that he was now a team leader at a big company, and that
he had just bought a car.
Meredith had had enough of it, but still made some responses, hoping to get home soon.
Finally, the car stopped. Seth looked at the location and said in disbelief, "You live here?"
Meredith didn't really want to talk about it, "I'm just staying here for the time being."
After saying that, she thanked him and left. Seth looked at her figure with mixed feelings. An ordinary
person couldn't even afford to rent an apartment here, not to mention buying one. Meredith, a cleaner
at the Xavier Group, lives here?
She must have found herself a sugar daddy.
Meredith didn't know what he was thinking. She went upstairs and opened the door, only to find that
there was someone else in the house.
