Chapter 18: Nikolai
“I’ve heard of it, but I thought it only effected Wolf Shifters. I’ve never heard of a vampire having a mate bond.” I replied intrigued on where Ambrose was going with this.
“It’s a rare occurrence for other species to have a mate bond, but while it is a rarity it does occur.” Ambrose said thoughtfully, his hand on his chin as if he was in deep thought.
“Has a human ever had a mate bond with a vampire?” I ask, feeling nervous about this connection between Mary and I.
“Never.” Ambrose replied solemnly. “There’s never been a documented occasion where a vampire was mated to human, other speices yes, but never a vampire.” NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
I grimaced at his response, “If that’s the case then why mention the mate bond at all? Mary is a human.”
“It’s the only logical explanation,” Ambrose said, standing up from his chair, pacing my office. “I’d like to study Mary.”
“No.” I replied sharper than intended. My beast was very protective over our blood slave.
“If you want answers it is the only way,” Ambrose said, crossing his arms and starring at me.
“Let’s just forget this conversation.” I replied, finding my annoyance with Ambrose increasing, “With so many factors pointing towards this connection being an impossibility, I’d like to just go about my life as normal.”
Ambrose looked at me like he wanted to say something more, but he just shook his head, and disappeared in front of me.
“Draq, Dru.” I mind linked the Dragon twins summoning them to me.
“Yes, your highness?“ They asked simultaneously once they appeared in front of me.
“You’ve met my blood slave,” I began not as a question but as a statement, “what does your dragon think of her?”
WU
Dru was the first to speak, “My dragon has told me, she plays an important part in the future of the supernatural world, but he won’t give me more detailed information.”
I wrinkled my nose at that, thinking back to what Ambrose had said about mates. If she was my mate, she’d be Queen of all Supernaturals. Her presence would make a great impact on the supernatural world, but how could a human, reign over the kingdom?”
“And my Dragon,” Draq said stepping forward, while Dru stepped back, “has said he senses a strong aura around her, one that he hasn’t smelt in a long time. When I asked him what kind of aura, he said he cannot remember as it has been a century since he last smelt the aura”
The twins responses left me with even more questions, who was Mary and what did her presence have to do with our future,
“And one more thing,” the twins said speaking in unison, their seer aura growing strong, their eyes Flickering red, blue, and yellow, mimicking a flame, “Your lifeline is tied to her, your souls have been woven together, if she dies, you’ll perish. She will be your greatest weakness.”
I felt my heart pounding in my chest, the room eerily quiet as the twins seer aura died down.
“Is there anything else you need from us boss man?“ asked Dru, completely oblivious to what had occurred.
“Uh yes, one more thing.” I said clearing my throat, “I need you to find any information you can on the mate bond.”
“The mate bond?“ asked Draq clearly confused, “like the bond that unites the shifters with their partners?”
“Yes, that.” I said trying to keep my voice steady, “I’ll tell Alpha Ash, you’ll be visiting, and that you need access to their archives.”
“Ugh okay boss.” Draq responded, knowing better than to question me.
“How soon do you want us to leave?” Dru asked.
“Immediately,” I responded, “the wolves will be busy with their mating ball this week due to the full moons presence. I want your reason for searching the archives to be kept secret, tell them you need info on the blood moon. They won’t question you why. But once you’re in the archives you can look into the mate bond.”
“Yes, your highness.” The twins said nodding their head at me.
I knew I didn’t have to question their loyalty to me, they’d get me the information I do desperately sought.
I quickly mind linked Kade telling him to get in touch with the werewolf Alpha and advise him that the twins were coming to look at their archives. Kade being his normal self never questioned why the twins were going to the Werewolf territory.
I glanced at my clock and noticed it was almost noon, Mary and I were suppose to meet in the Foyer soon for a trip into town, and my beast was looking forward to being in her presence again. I quickly locked my office and set off towards the foyer, deep in thought about what I had recently learned in my office.
Nevaeh and I had headed back upstairs to the bedroom Nikolai had assigned me, Nevaeh’s handprint had already been entered into the scanner so she had no problem gaining access to the royal floor. My mouth drops open when I entered the room. It’s gorgeous. There was a beautiful four poster bed in the middle of the room, the woodwork was painted gold, and had little intricate designs etched into it, the
comforter was very feminine, with a beautiful floral design printed onto it. Beside the bed was a nightstand, that matched the bed perfectly, on top of the nightstand was a small bedside lamp, perfect for laying in bed and curling up with a good book. There were beautiful paintings hung up on the wall portraying the beauty of nature. I continued to walk into the room venturing towards the closet, opening the French doors and peeking my head inside. The closet was bare as if awaiting to be filled full of garments. I walked from the closet to the other side of the room, where there was another set of French doors, opening the doors, I opened it up to a very familiar bathroom, it was the bathroom i’d used when Nikolai had first brought me to his palace. My first time in this bathroom, I had looked around and I clearly remembered there not being another set of doors, was this a recent addition? And
into the bathroom, my heart beating faster as I reached the other end and saw another set of doors, I quietly opened up the door and was hit with Nikolai’s intoxicating scent. I was right, this bathroom led to Nikolai’s room, but why would he give me access to his bedroom. I quietly shut the door behind me, and walked back into my room, Nevaeh was sitting on the bed, making herself at home.
W
“Wow the Queen’s chambers really are exquisite.” Nevaeh said breathlessly, taking in the scenery.
“Your room isn’t like this?” I asked sitting down on the bed beside her.
“Oh don’t get me wrong, my room is nice and all, but it’s not nearly as spacious and it doesn’t have its own bathroom.” Nevaeh said nonchalantly.
“Oh.” I said in response, my mind racing a million miles a minute, why had Nikolai given me this room.“ i guess it’s one of the perks of being the King’s blood slave.“
“Actually, “ Nevaeh said her voice lowering an octave, “I’ve heard word around the castle, that no one has been in this room since the Queen died.”
I felt a stirring of jealousy in my stomach, what right did I have to be jealous of Nikolai’s deceased wife, I shouldn’t be jealous of anything regarding Nikolai. “I didn’t realize the Vampire King had been married.” I find myself saying.
“Oh not the current king,” Nevaeh said laughing, “he’s sworn never to take a Queen or produce an heir. The Queen was Nikolai’s mother, she passed away awhile ago, and Nikolai boarded up this room.
That’s why there’s so much talk about the way Nikolai is treating you.”
I started fiddling with my hands nervously, so Nikolai had given me the Queen’s room and marked me as his, what was he trying to do, put a mark on my head? Did he really despise my presence that much that he wanted an assassin to take me out so he didn’t have to be feel the guilt of my death?
“Oh, is that the time?” Nevaeh said jumping up from the bed. “We must hurry to the foyer or you’ll be late meeting with the king.”
I crossed my arms defiantly, remaining sitting on the bed. “I am not going.” I said firmly.
“But Mary,” Nevaeh said, fear showing clearly in her eyes.
“No Nevaeh. He has basically put a target on my head. I am not going to willing risk my life by going out to the market with him.”
“Mary, no one would dare attack you with the king present.” Nevaeh started trying to encourage me to not defy the kings orders.
“I don’t care Nevaeh, he has marked me as his, and I am not his. I may be but a human, but I will not cower down to some bully king. “ I stated firmly.
“Mary…” Nevaeh started up again.
“I’ve made up my mind Nevaeh, If you don’t want to take the brunt of the kings anger, then I suggest you leave now.”
Nevaeh looked like she wanted to say something again, before she turned around and hurried out the room, shutting the door roughly behind her. I flung myself back on the bed, and sunk into the mattress, it was the softest bed, I’d ever laid in. I figured, I might as well enjoy myself and this room that had been given to me before I was confronted by an angry vampire king. Nikolai may be angered that I declined meeting with him, but I was angrier with him and I was looking forward to this confrontation, before the day was over Nikolai would be hearing exactly how I felt about him marking me as his
