Under My Boss’ Table

After dinner, Anna came up to me. Hesitantly, she asked me for help and some advice about work. As I explained its subtleties to her, more than once I saw her eyes on me. Her strange behavior even started to scare me a bit. The point is, Anna communicated with other colleagues calmly, adequately, not at all embarrassed by them. Was I formidable or terrifying?

I would think about it later.

I was going to go to Edward’s house at night. I was not at all happy with this prospect and hoped that we would finish quickly.

When everyone left the office, Anna stayed again and walked over to me.

Anna said suddenly:

“Uh… Ladies?” Edward coughed somewhere behind. “Am I interrupting? Elvira, we must go.”

Anna and I recoiled from each other as if scared. She immediately blushed. Edward looked at her with interest, and it didn’t escape to me the way he looked at her cleavage and how lust flashed in his eyes…

It was getting dark and darkness fell on the streets. Sitting in the car, I silently stared at the houses that ran past. Edward was also silent. His apartment was large, loft style. His wife welcomed us almost immediately.

We walked down a long corridor.

I lost count of the number of rooms. Edward’s study was similar to his at the office, except for the home decor, like landscapes on the walls and wedding photos on the table.

The discussion was not very comfortable for me. Edward seemed content with everything, but I felt superfluous here. Sofia was constantly coming to the office, then she watered the flowers and then brought coffee (she even brought me tea). And every time she looked at us, she tried to understand what we were talking about and if it was related to work. I started to get annoyed by her frequent intrusion into the workflow, and after a couple of hours I couldn’t stand it.

“Edward, I’m sorry, but I’ll go. For some reason I can’t focus…”

“Yes, of course, that’s enough for today.” Edward nodded and got to his feet. “Can I still take you home today?” It was already completely dark.

“But you said something about public transportation.” I chuckled.

Edward felt embarrassed and headed down the hall. His behavior was fundamentally different from what it was before, he suddenly began to feel ashamed of me periodically, his authority disappeared somewhere and I couldn’t decide if I liked the new Edward.

Sofia stopped us at the door: “How’s everybody?”

“Honey, I’ll take Elvira.” my boss told her. “And I’ll return immediately to you…”

“No.” She cut him off abruptly.

“Well, exactly, she’s jealous!” I thought. We froze and stared at Sofia in disbelief. She, realizing her mistake, continued softer:

“I mean, I meant… You said Elvira can easily go by public transport.”

“Sofia.” Edward looked at her expressively. They looked at each other in silence, as if they were arguing mentally. Finally, Sofia gave up, turning a little pale:

“Well, have it your way.”

We got out and got into the car.

At other times I would have been glad of this obvious victory over her wife, but here, for some reason, I felt sorry for her. Edward made it clear that he wouldn’t let her manipulate him. And Anna? He might also like Anna, and they could become lovers. What would Sofia do then?

Although, would all this matter to him when she had her baby? After all, she would then give him her full attention.

“What are you thinking?” Edward asked me suddenly.

“Yes, so, nothing.” I answered evasively, making it clear that I didn’t feel like talking. We were silent again for a while, after which Edward resumed his attempt:

“Sorry, Sofia, she’s a bit crazy in recent times. Pregnancy, hormones. Well, you understand about that.” He gave a short laugh. I was silent.

We were silent a little longer. When we got to my house, Edward said in a firm voice:

“Listen. About what I told you then.”

“Right, you shouldn’t…” I started, but Edward wouldn’t let me finish:

“I was wrong! I feel guilty. And, I miss you so much, Elvira.”

I experienced a powerful sense of déjà vu. Does it seem like it was in my dream?

“What happened already, happened. I’m not mad at you.” I answered peacefully and turned to get out of the car. But Edward locked the doors.

“I said I miss you. This is true. I made sure from the start that I only needed you for sex. And after those words I suppressed all the emotions. But this is stronger than me! I… I think you became dear to me.”

“Do you believe it or do you know it exactly?” I scoffed. “You have to decide, Edward. I remember what you told me, how you were not interested in me.”

“I was stupid and blind.” He whispered. “Please! Have mercy on me…”

I stared at him. The new Edward definitely didn’t really appeal to me…
