The divorce papers
At the farm, Sasha held a toy car watching the little boy sitting on the staircase.
“I miss my mum so much. I wish she was here with me.” Tommy hugged his dog Spark sniffing back the tears. He had insisted on taking the dog when they moved which Mr Johnson obliged. This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
“Are you sad because your mother couldn’t come?” Sasha walked up to him holding the toy car behind her back.
As the dog growled at her, Tommy kept tapping on its back and didn’t bother to respond to her.
“Don’t be sad Tommy. Look, I brought you a gift.” Sasha sat beside him handing him the toy car.
“Thank you aunt Sasha but I don’t want a toy.” With a frown on his face, he pushed the toy away.
“I know you miss your mum but your dad is here and he is very happy to be with you.” Sasha smiled trying to cheer him up.
“They won’t let me see dad, grandma Mary told me he is very sick.” He kept holding onto the dog, more tears filling his eyes.
“If you take the present and smile at me, then I’ll take you to see your dad.” She offered him the toy.
“Really aunt Sasha? I can see dad?” He cheerfully asked as he took the toy.
“Yes, right now if you like.” She promised.
“Thank you.” Tommy stood up happily hugging Sasha. “Can you take me to dad right now?” With the frown wiped off his face, Sasha nodded as she held his hand. And took him into the room Mark was sleeping in.
After a month in a coma, Mark woke up and was transferred to his father’s farm to recuperate. He had to do therapy to train his legs how to walk again.
Staring at the father and son, who looked so much alike Sasha smiled. “Let’s have a selfie.” She asked Tommy to smile as she took pictures of the three of them.
Though Diana had not accomplished the mission to get rid of Melissa, Sasha had her way of keeping Melissa out of their lives.
….
At the office, Melissa got a call from the manager asking her to get to his office.
“Sir, you called for me…” Walking into the office, she found Sasha swiveling on the manager’s chair.
“Melissa, how have you been?” Sasha smiled leaning back on the chair.
“What do you want?” Her brows knitted, Melissa asked, irritated by her presence.
Seeing Sasha reminded Melissa of the day she found her in Mark’s arms.
“Huh, I see you’re not happy to see me. Have a seat.” She spoke, tapping a pen on the table.
“I don’t have time for this nonsense.” Melissa turned to leave but Sasha’s words stopped her.
“Mark sent me. Here, sign these documents.” The mention of Mark’s name froze Melissa on the spot.
For weeks she had not heard any news about him or their son. She was eager to hear from them but looking at the sheet of papers on the table her heart broke.
“He wants to start anew with me so he asked me to bring these.” Sasha grinned, staring at Melissa peruse the documents.
“Mark can’t do this.” Melissa shook her head as she pushed the documents to Sasha.
“We have been seeing each other secretly, Melissa. He didn’t expect you to walk in on us in the office that day but since you already know, it’s not a secret anymore. He only married you to get Tommy. Now he has no use for you anymore.” Sasha shrugged her shoulders, handing the papers to her.
“I won’t sign. Ask him to bring the divorce papers himself.” Melissa slapped the documents on the table.
“That’s not a good idea, I’m telling you.” Getting her phone from the bag, Sasha showed Melissa a picture of her and Tommy hugging and laughing. “See.” She pointed at the picture. “Your son is very happy under my care. I’m sure you understand what can happen if you don’t sign.” She smiled arrogantly, handing her the pen.
“You can’t do anything to him. Mr. Johnson won’t let you,” Melissa said, staring at the pictures one after the other.
The three of them smiling looked like a happy family, and it made her miss her son more.
“Try me. Accidents happen all the time.” She said sitting back on the chair cracking her knuckles.
Feeling helpless, Melissa placed the phone down, then took the pen and signed the documents before leaving the office.
….
“Why did the manager call for you?” Jenifer asked as soon as Melissa got back to the office.
“I’m taking some days off work. Please take care of these projects for me.” She handed the file to Jenifer as she cleared her desk.
“Melissa, what is going on? I saw Sasha leave the manager’s office after you left.” Nancy rushed into the office breathlessly.
“What? Sasha called you to the office. Did she have you fired?” Jenifer questioned standing before Melissa’s desk.
“No, she didn’t have me fired. She came to bring me the divorce papers.” Melissa slammed on the chair and covered her face with her hands trying to control her emotions.
“No! Mark will never ask for a divorce. You should let me break that witch’s teeth.” Nancy clenched her fist pacing around the office.
“Calm down Nancy, you’re not helping.” Jenifer stopped Nancy’s ranting. “Hope you didn’t sign.” She turned to Melissa.
“I had to, she has Tommy and I don’t know what she can do to him. Melissa sniffed then wiped her eyes. “Don’t worry about me. I’m going to get my son from the Johnsons.” Melissa stood up and took her bag then assured her friends she would be okay before leaving the office.
