Chapter Thirty two
An Unlikely Alliance
**
Ruby
“It’s too early!” I scrambled to get into my clothes as the room breaks out into chaos.
Usually, nothing interrupts the ritual, but partners everywhere are separating from each other before feeding, frustration, and worry mingled on their faces.
Humans to leave at once!” Klaus is also dressing at top speed.
“Through the emergency exit. Vampires, meet the attack head-on.”
He lowers his voice, speaking only to me. Ruby, wait here.”
Roland is chivvying Nate toward the emergency exit, an exit Klaus had installed after the last attack. It leads straight to the ground and emerges a few blocks away.
Amelia follows Nate, and the rest of the human employees follow her.
Roland finally gets his clothes on and hurries to Klaus’s side.
The two of them dart out of the room.
Within moments, I’m alone.
Klaus shuts and locks the door, but I know that won’t keep me safe if we lose this fight. I go to the keyhole and peek through.
I quickly regret it. Vampires are everywhere, fighting so fast that their individual limbs are blurred to my eyes. I back away, wringing my hands.
I wish there was something I could do.
Wait. There is something I can do.
I don’t know many spells yet, and those ones I have learned are hardly appropriate for battle. I wrack my brains, wondering if there’s anything I can do to help.
I peek through the keyhole again. Our side is losing. From what I can make out, the number of attackers is much higher than Klaus or Elena estimated.
Nachren.” I whisper the word, though I doubt I would be heard in all the racket of fighting even if I shouted.
The vampire ľ’m looking at claps his eyes to his face, long enough for Roland to take him down.
The ‘night spell’, as Sara calls it, is a temporary blindness spell.
It doesn’t blind someone completely but makes them think that they are surrounded by a dark, moonless night in a forest rather than day or electronic lighting.
It has the same effect as a blinding spell, except it’s not nearly as difficult. I move slightly, whispering the spell again, targeting a vampire-fighting Klaus.
I’m not an experienced witch yet, and I quickly tire. I sink down against the door, breathing hard.
Just as it looks like our side might be gaining the upper hand, a rumbling and shaking have me leaping to my feet.
The floor appears to be collapsing under me.
They must have done something to the foundations. They’ve realized they can’t beat Klaus and Elena, so they’re bringing down the whole building.
Evacuate!”
I easily recognize Klaus’s voice. We must have driven the other vampires back, then, if he’s calling to evacuate.
“No, Klaus, you’re injured- go, I’ll get her.”
Klaus is injured?
I’m headed for the door when it is pulled open. Elena is there. “Come, Ruby, we mustard go now.”
I follow her at once. “Where’s Klaus? Is he hurt?
He’ll be fine, it’s just a leg wound. He has the company bus waiting to take us to a safe house.
Of course. It’s still daytime, so we’ll need a vehicle with blacked-out windows to travel effectively.
Klaus seems to have it sorted out.
Elena is just helping me scramble over some broken desks when the ceiling above us collapses.
I scream and cover my head with my hands.
When I look up, there’s dust everywhere, and Elena is trapped under a large beam.
She tries to lift it, but it’s too heavy even for vampire strength.
For a moment – just a moment – I hesitate.
It would be easier to let Elena die. Klaus and I could be together, then. Her coven would remain allied with his.
But it would be wrong, and as much as I want Klaus, I don’t want him at the expense of another’s life.
Not again.
Never again.
I run over to Elena and try to help her lift the beam, but it’s too heavy for even our combined strength. I stare desperately around, but everyone else seems to have
evacuated.
There’s no one to help us.
I only have a second to evaluate. By the shaking of the floor, the building feels like it might come down at any moment.
Vampires do not like witches. I don’t know what the consequences of letting Elena see me use magic will be… but I’ve already ascertained that I’m not willing to let her die.
Israelis.” The simple lifting spell doesn’t lift the beam very high, but it’s enough.
Elena rolls out from underneath it, grimacing. She gets clear just as the beam drops. Her leg is bleeding heavily as she pulls out a large piece of wood from her thigh.
Can you walk?
Elena nods but wavers when she tries to put weight on the leg. I pull her arm over my shoulder.
“It’s too late… the bus will already have left.”
It’s ok, we can hang out in the basement until Klaus realizes we’re still here. It’s fortified down there, so it should hold even if the rest of the building collapses.”
Neither of us speaks as we hobble down the stairs. We manage to make it to the basement in time, but it’s a near thing.
I slam the bomb shelter door closed, then hurry to Elena.
I pull my jacket off and wrap it around her leg. “That should halt the bleeding until we can get Klaus. Do you need to feed?”
Elena blinks at me. She seems a bit spaced out, probably from blood loss. “You would do that for me?”
I don’t feel like going into a long explanation. of morals right now, so I simply nod. “I. Would.”
“I think a feeding would help me.”
I lie down on my back and put my hand on my clit. I close my eyes and try to block out all other sounds.
It takes longer than usual to bring myself to orgasm, but I manage it.
“Now, Elena.”
Her teeth sink into my throat. The thrill of the feeding hits me, and suddenly I’m not at all bothered by our current situation.
The two of us lie next to each other on our backs, recovering.
Elena is the first to speak. *”You’re a witch.”
“Yes.”
And Klaus hired you?”
I wasn’t a witch when I got the job.”
I thought witches were born?”
Most are, but there are ways to gain power.” I sigh as I think of kelly.
“The price is too high, though.”
“Why did you do it.”
I don’t answer. It’s difficult to concentrate on which facts I’m supposed to be keeping from Elena when I’m still high from the feeding.
It’s also not just the feeding.
Going through traumatic experiences indeed brings people closer.
As we lie together on the basement floor, I feel like I could confide in Elena, and maybe it would be ok.
Perhaps she has some of the same thoughts as me because her next words are soft and encouraging.
You can talk to me, you know. I don’t know you very well, but Klaus holds you in high regard. You’re part of our coven, even if you’re not a vampire. All the humans are.
She really is changing her perspective on humans. I can see why Klaus’s feelings about her are evolving.
“Do you love him? Klaus?”
Elena shakes her head. “I respect him and I care for him, but no, it’s not love. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t turn into love someday… but I don’t fool myself. He’ll never love me. His heart belongs to you.”
My breath catches in my throat. “You know?”
It’s not that difficult to see. The way you two look at each other… I can tell you’re in love. It’s ok, Ruby. I care enough about him that I want him to be happy. You two don’t need to sneak around anymore.”
I laugh shakily. “I was not expecting that.”
I hope that someday, someone looks at me the way you and Klaus look at each other.”
Is that allowed?”
“Not usually. Mated vampires are generally faithful to each other. But if you and Klaus can have each other, I don’t see why I can’t have someone too.
“I’m sure Klaus will agree.”
It seems I’ve made an unlikely alliance with Elena.
Before we can say anything else, Elena sits up, suddenly alert. “Someone is coming.”
I don’t know how she can tell with the noise of the building collapsing above us, but I’ve never known vampire hearing to be wrong.
I get up too, just in time to see Klaus staggering into the basement through the back entrance.
He is still bleeding, and his skin is red and burned all over.
Ruby.” He holds out a hand to me, then collapses on the floor.
I’m barely aware of a scream leaving my lips as I rush to his side.
