Chapter 27
Chapter 27 On Fire She finally said those words after loving him for so many years. He stoprod without looking at her, and said, “So be it.”
Her vision blurred as she fought back her tears. When he left, Maia finally broke down in sobs. She wanted to end their marriage on a good note, but she had been wrong
Since it was dark outside, she could only see her reflection in the panoramic window. She smiled bitterly. Her unwavering love for Cedric had just died and could never be revived.
Awhile later, a thick plume of smoke crept in from outside the door.
This alarmed her. Struggling to get up, she stumbled toward the door. When she exited her bedroom, she was shocked to find a fire raging downstairs. She stood frozen, unsure of what to do.
“The place is on fire! But how?” She started screaming, “Help!”
With a hand covering her mouth and nose, she wanted to rush downstairs. However, the fire was fierce. Her legs went limp, and she fell on the second-floor corridor.
“What can | do now? | have to find help!”
She saw a nearby surveillance camera and remembered Susie telling her Cedric could watch her every move. She quickly waved at it, trying to get attention.
“Cedric, can you see me? Can you hear my voice?
“The place’s on fire! | can’t get out. | can’t get out, Cedric!” She coughed.
“| can’t move, and I’ve no idea what’s wrong with me. You’ve got to save me!”
The thick smoke made her cough nonstop, and her desperate cries seemed to drain all her strength
She saw the flames on the first floor and heard the fire crackling as it devoured everything in its path. She struggled to stand on the railing but returned to the bathroom feeling weak.
She turned on the faucet, but there was no water.
As the smoke began to seep into the bathroom, Maia collapsed on the floor, suspecting that the fire was not an accident. “Maia, you'll never walk out of here again!” Was Cedric talking about the fire when he said. that?

Maia closed her eyes slowly and began to cry.
‘Why? Why couldn’t he believe me? Why would he suspect me just because of what Rita said?*
She had been so repeatedly let down that she gave up resisting. No matter how she tried, it would be in vain.
Cedric became concerned when he noticed her passive expression and her neck turning red. He could almost hear the gentle voice calling to him repeatedly.
“Shit!” he cursed.
He couldn't bring himself to do it. When he released her, Maia collapsed onto the bed and coughed violently.
“Maia, you'll never walk out of here again!”
‘Is he trying to imprison me forever?’ Teary—eyed, Maia glared at him in despair as she
trembled.
“| hateContentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
you, Cedric!” She shouted after him with all the strength left in her.
