Chapter 48
Chapter 48 Didn’t You Hate Me? “What is it?” Aiken turned back to Maia. “Please be careful.”
“Don’t worry about me! Make sure you take care of my sunglasses, I'll come get them when I’m back. You should take a break while you can!” Aiken said, flashing an OK sign to reassure her.
“Of course,” Maia promised.
Aiken then left with the others to help the locals.
After what seemed like hours, the winds began to clear up. However, the rain still showed no signs of subsiding.
The rapid water currents were strong and rushed toward the lower areas in the town. Most of the roads were flooded.
Maia looked out through the windows. She saw that the tide was as high as a two-story building. Numerous residential areas around the hotels were completely destroyed.
Maia’s fatigue started to set in and she slowly drifted off to sleep. Suddenly, a woman in the room screamed, “Look! A child! There's a child in the water!
“Oh my God! It’s really a child! Is there anyone else who could swim here?” “All the good swimmers left to help the locals. What should we do now?”
Maia got up and pushed her way through the crowd to check on the situation. She saw a girl, about 7 or 8 years old, struggling to stay afloat in the water.
She looked like she was about to drown. There was no time to lose!
Before Maia realized what she was doing, she was already running towards the main entrance.
Aconcerned staff member called after her. “Ms. Maia, where are you going?”This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
“We need to save her!” Maia replied. The atmosphere in the room instantly shifted as more. people started to join in to offer help. “Til come too!”
“Me too!”
“Let's all go! We might be of help as well!”
Everyone in the room stood up and hurried after Maia. Even though Maia was still feeling a numb sensation in her legs and one of her arms was injured, she continued to run downstairs.
When she got to the third floor, she noticed that the little girl had managed to grab onto a handrail. However, the handrail was slowly coming loose. There was a chance that it might break anytime, and she would be swept away by the rapid currents.
There was no time to lose. Maia immediately broke one of the glass windows and jumped into the water.
Maia was a decent swimmer. Unfortunately, due to the strong currents and her injuries, she was just barely able to stay afloat as she struggled to swim closer to the girl.
The little girl kept crying for her mother as she tried her very best to cling to the handrail. Just then, it snapped, and she cried out in shock.
Maia quickly grabbed onto a nearby tree branch and reached out to grip the edge of the little girl’s clothing.
Maia could feel the water splashing onto her face. Both her legs and arms were throbbing in pain as she told the child to grab on tightly onto her.
When the girl realized Maia had come to save her, she quickly held onto her arm.
All of a sudden, a voice broke through. “Ms. Maia, we'll try to get a rope to you. You can put it around the girl, and we'll pull her in!”
Maia turned toward the direction of the hotel. She noticed a few guests were standing at the partially flooded second-floor area.
Judging from the speed of the current and the condition of her body, Maia would never be able to swim back with the little girl. This was the only way to save them both.
“Get ready to catch it!”
Maia nodded as the people at the hotel started hurling the rope toward them. After countless tries, Maia was finally able to grab onto it.
“Try using my arm as support to move higher. I'll tie the rope around you!”
“I can't!
I'm too tired!” the girl sobbed.
“Trust me, you can do it! Don’t give up now!”
Maia could feel the last of her strength leaving her body, but she had to ensure the girl was safe. Hope was just within an arm’s reach, they should not give up now.
The child nodded and tried her best to lift herself with Maia’s arm as support. Maia proceeded to tie the rope around the child’s body.
When she was done, she told the child, “Listen carefully, don’t let go of the rope no matter what. Do you understand?” +15 BONUS
The child nodded her head with determination. It was admirable how such a young child could muster such courage even when she was so afraid.
Maia lifted her injured arm with difficulty to signal those in the building. When the guests saw her sign, they started to reel the rope in.
A few minutes later, the child had managed to reach the second floor of the building safely.
“Ms. Maia, hang on! We’re coming for you next!”
Maia nodded. She was starting to feel light-headed. Her injured arm was bleeding again, and her legs that were keeping her afloat were throbbing. She might not be able to last much longer.
Maia could not believe her luck. She just survived a fire one year ago and now had to face a hurricane. She smiled helplessly as the current continued to wash against her.
Maia did not want to give up easily, but it was just too much. She had no more strength left in her. Her hand was slowly slipping. Suddenly, there was a snap. The branch she was hanging onto broke. Maia refused to give up. She tried to grab onto another nearby branch, but to no avail. She was too late!
Screams could be heard coming from the other side as Maia finally accepted her fate. Just as she was about to close her eyes, a strong grip grabbed onto her arm and pulled her close.
“This time, | won’t let you go!” A familiar voice tugged at Maia’s frozen heart.
She opened her eyes to see Cedric right in front of her. Was she hallucinating? How could he possibly be here? Maia was too shocked to say anything.
“Look out!” the rescue team yelled.
Cedric immediately noticed a huge fallen billboard moving rapidly towards them. Even with a rescue rope around his body, they could not swim out of the way in time as the currents were too strong.
He pulled Maia closer to his chest and made sure she was shielded entirely from the object.
Cedric braced himself for the impact. With a loud thud, he could feel the billboard colliding into his upper back.
The sharp edge of the board scraped his skin and flesh, leaving a deep gash in his back.
Cedric let out a muffled cry as he tried to endure the pain.
“Mr. Larkin, are you okay?” the rescue team yelled in concern. They were still some distance
Cedric did not respond as he was busy checking if Maia was hurt. At that moment, nothing else mattered to him except Mala. Maia shook her head in response as she continued to stay silent.
“Hang onto me,” Cedric instructed. Maia remained still. Cedric frowned at her lack of response and said, “I thought you still hated me?”
