Chapter 55
“Who?”
Linda was taken aback, not expecting such a strong reaction from Freya.
“It’s me.”
Freya patted her chest in relief. She had thought it was Elijah. Thankfully, it wasn’t.
Linda asked, “Why are you so nervous?”
Freya smiled, “I’m just a bit mentally tense.”
Linda expressed understanding, thinking that Freya must have been traumatized after being locked up. Though Freya was at fault, being deprived of food and water for three days was a bit too much. It was understandable for her to be traumatized.
“I’ll make you something delicious to nourish your body,” Linda said. “I came up to ask what you’d like, and I’ll go buy the ingredients.”
Freya thought for a moment and said, “I want to eat dumplings.”
Linda laughed, “You’ve got a craving.”
“I’ll go to the supermarket,” Linda said, heading downstairs.
Freya stared at Linda’s retreating figure. Her expression gradually became more serious. She felt like she was taking advantage of Linda’s kindness. She sighed lightly. She had no choice but to resort to such tactics.
Freya lay down again.
Her phone received a message.
It was from Liora, asking what time Elijah would finish work.
Freya stared at the message, wondering if Liora was going to take action today.
Wasn’t it a bit too hasty?
As far as she knew, Liora wasn’t particularly skilled in cooking. That woman seemed to be very concerned about her appearance; even the cooking fumes might be considered harmful to her skin.
Freya got up and went downstairs. She used the house phone to call Xander, but then she remembered that Xander might still be recovering from the car accident and hadn’t returned to the company. It seemed she had to make the trip herself.
[I’ll go and find out.]
After sending the message, she walked to the mirror, straightened her clothes-quite wrinkled from lying down for a while-and, as it was still early, decided to take a quick shower.
Feeling refreshed, she headed to the company.
She didn’t plan to see Elijah. She just wanted to inquire about his schedule. Or perhaps, fate was on her side. In the lobby, the secretary saw her. The relationship between Freya and Elijah wasn’t public knowledge within the company. No one knew about it.
However, the secretary did. She was loyal to Elijah and wouldn’t reveal Freya’s identity. Moreover, personally, she didn’t want Freya’s identity to be exposed. She walked over and asked, “Do you need something?”
Freya smiled and asked, “I just wanted to know, what time will Mr Silverton finish work today?”
The secretary frowned, “Why do you need to know?”
“Can’t I ask?” Freya turned around and said, “I’ll ask someone else…”
As she said this, Freya was about to take the elevator.
The secretary stopped her, “Mr Silverton doesn’t have any social engagements tonight. As for when he’ll finish work, I’m not sure.”
“Is that so?” Freya said, “Thanks, I got it.”
She turned to leave while sending a message to Liora, [No social engagements tonight.]
The secretary was about to take the elevator when she saw Elijah coming. Elijah noticed Freya’s back and was surprised. But there was no change in his expression, maintaining his usual cool demeanor. “What is she doing here?”
The secretary answered honestly, “She came to ask if you have any social engagements and what time you’ll finish work. I told her you don’t have any engagements tonight, and she left.”
Elijah wondered if she was concerned about him.
Why else would she ask about his work hours?
Maybe she was worried he wouldn’t come back for dinner?
He decided to go home earlier.
…
Returning from the company, Freya found that Linda had already bought the ingredients. She was in the kitchen preparing. Freya walked over to help.
Linda said, “You can rest, I’ll handle it.”
Freya said, “I’m fine now. I have a lot of energy. Let me help you with the dumplings!”
Linda suggested, “How about you rest, and I’ll make the dumplings.”
Freya said, “No, I’m fine. I’ll knead the dough!”
Linda said, “Alright.”
So, Linda took care of chopping the ingredients for the dumplings, and Freya kneaded the dough. Their teamwork was efficient. Linda finished chopping the dumpling fillings, and Freya had improved her dumpling wrapping skills significantly.
Freya wasn’t used to these activities; after graduating, she started working at the hospital, and her job was often busy, leaving little time for such things. Now, she found it quite amusing.
Comparing her own dumplings with Linda’s, Linda’s were exquisite and beautiful, while Freya’s didn’t reach the level of Linda’s, but they were not bad-like misshapen lumps with filling.
“Oh, my dumplings look so ugly. I won’t have an appetite later,” Freya sighed.
Linda laughed and said, “Skills come with practice.”
Freya, being intelligent, quickly grasped the technique.
The more she practiced, the better she became.
Linda noticed her progress, and Freya’s seriousness in making dumplings made Linda think she was doing it to please Elijah. After all, she had just inquired about Elijah’s preferences.
Thinking this, Linda smiled with a touch of ambiguity.
Freya, focused on wrapping dumplings, didn’t notice Linda’s expression and asked, “What’s right?”
“You’re doing it right, knowing how to please your husband,” Linda teased.
At the doorway, Elijah had just entered and heard Linda’s words. He stopped in his tracks, his heart in slight astonishment. He stopped in his tracks, fully focused on hearing Freya’s response.
In the kitchen, Freya had no idea that Elijah had returned. But she understood Linda’s words and couldn’t explain. She sighed.
Jokingly, she said, “You figured it out, huh?”
Linda looked like she knew it all along, “I’m not that foolish.”
Freya laughed. She found Linda so cute. How could Elijah, with his deeds and abilities, have such a kind and adorable maid like Linda? He must have done something good in his past life to have this opportunity. In this life, his character didn’t deserve such a good maid as Linda.
…
Elijah stood at the doorway. His heart skipped a beat. When Freya went to the company to inquire about his schedule, he thought he was overthinking things. But she really did it for him.
He went to the company to check if he had any engagements and what time he’d finish work. Was she afraid he wouldn’t come home for dinner?
She personally made dumplings for him.
Maybe, just maybe, Freya actually liked him?
She just refused to admit it in front of him?
Thinking of this, a subtle smile appeared on Elijah’s face, restrained yet subtle. His inner excitement surged. His steps became brisk as he walked upstairs.
In the kitchen, Freya and Linda were almost done.
Freya helped Linda tidy up, and the kitchen was soon spotless. Freya boiled water and prepared to cook the dumplings.
Linda asked, “Should we wait a bit? Mr Silverton hasn’t come back yet.”
Freya thought, I wanted to eat dumplings; who said they were for Elijah?Content is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
But she couldn’t say that directly and said, “He might be back soon.”
Linda nodded, “Okay, you cook the dumplings, and I’ll go tidy up the clothes.”
Freya agreed, “Sure.”
The water boiled, splashing tiny droplets. Freya was about to grab a bowl for cold water when a pair of hands appeared around her waist, holding her. Her eyes widened involuntarily as she turned around and saw Elijah!
