Chapter 99 Sharing a Bed
But Elijah paid no heed to her pleas. He sauntered over, settled onto her bed, and sprawled out. Freya had to shuffle inward, creating space, lest she be squashed.
“This bed is too small for two,” Freya murmured.
Elijah rolled over, enveloping her in his embrace. “Husband and wife share a bed, Freya.”
Freya stayed silent. Her body tensed, unwilling to budge. Elijah’s proximity, their skin brushing, made her feel like she was on fire. His warm breath on the back of her ear sent involuntary shivers down her spine.
Her thoughts were a whirlwind. She was human too, with desires and emotions. Enfolded so closely by a man, her body responded.
Maybe Elijah indeed possessed an irresistible charm, which was hard for any woman to resist.
Her throat dry, she whispered, “Can you stay away from me?”
Against her neck, Elijah mumbled, “No.”
And then, silence.
Soon, the rhythmic cadence of breathing filled the room.Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
Freya wondered, “Is he asleep?”
Yet, his closeness thwarted her own rest. The bed was cramped, no escape. She took a deep breath. Staring at the ceiling, Freya’s eyes wide open. She was repeatedly coaching herself to remain calm. Slowly, she found solace.
It felt like an eternity before she finally drifted into sleep. But as she slept, Elijah opened his eyes. His gaze, clear, showed no signs of just waking up.
Clearly, he hadn’t slept.
His long lashes fluttered as he took advantage of Freya’s slumber to touch her face, a faint smile playing on his lips.
Perhaps, Freya was this submissive without resisting his touch only when she was in her sleep.
He held her tighter.
The next morning, when she awoke, Elijah was gone.
She couldn’t discern when he left. His absence brought relief. As she readied to rise, Linda arrived with food and handed her a cellphone. Freya had asked Linda to purchase it with the money she provided.
“Being without a phone is inconvenient,” she thought.
“I’ll assist you up; let’s eat first,” Linda said.
“I’ll go to the bathroom first,” Freya replied.
With Linda’s aid, she made her way in.
After Linda left, perched on the toilet lid, she retrieved her phone, contemplating calling Luna. Yet, considering the early hour, she refrained.
Leaning against the wall, she hopped on one foot. Linda came over to support her, saying, “Let me know when you’re ready. Your leg is not convenient, we don’t want a second injury later.”
“I’ll be careful,” Freya said with a smile. She recognized Linda’s genuine concern.
Linda had prepared ginseng chicken soup, flavorful with added ginseng, eggs, and steamed dumplings, and she indulged in a hearty meal.
Freya’s chest hadn’t felt constricted in the past few days, and it seemed the milk had diminished. After finishing her meal, Linda went to wash her changed clothes. Seated on the bed, Freya retrieved her phone and called Luna Ann.
The call was promptly answered.
“Hello?”
“Luna, it’s me, Freya.”
“Yeah.”
“Have you met Orion?”
Luna replied, “Yes, he came to find me.”
Recalling Orion’s state yesterday, Freya decided to share, “Do you know how he looks now? He was drunk yesterday, and I’ve never seen him so despondent. It was heart-wrenching to witness…”
Luna remained silent.
Freya comprehended matters of the heart surpassed external influence. She couldn’t help but empathize with Orion.
“Do you genuinely not love him anymore?”
If Luna had truly moved on, Freya wouldn’t intrude. If not, since they still cared, they should converse instead of causing mutual pain.
Luna fell silent again.
“Not speaking implies you still care about him, right?” Freya pondered and said, “Luna, about your situation, I haven’t asked before, but now I genuinely want to know. Is there something you must hide from Orion? Why won’t you tell him?”
“Freya…” Luna hesitated, eager to speak but struggling.
Freya exercised patience, refraining from pushing her.
The wall clock ticked away.
Time elapsed.
“Freya… regarding Orion’s family, our backgrounds differ too much. His mother discovered our relationship and approached me.”
“Did she ask you to break up? Was it like in TV shows, where she offered you money?”
Freya was aware of Orion’s affluent family background.
“What’s on your mind?” Luna’s mood eased slightly. Freya’s intrusion granted her respite.
“She didn’t offer money. She expressed a desire for Orion’s wife to be someone capable of assisting him. She has her eyes on the C&E Group heiress. In terms of background, she’s the best candidate to aid Orion Russo. You may not know, Orion’s father has a second family, and Orion has a half-brother from that side. His half-brother covets their family inheritance. Orion dislikes family disputes, and his mother fears the family’s legacy falling into the hands of the second family. Thus, she requires a daughter-in-law with a suitable background, not someone like me. My dad is an ordinary worker, and my mom succumbed to stomach cancer not long ago. I’m a mere forensic doctor. Being with Orion won’t benefit him at all. I keep silent to spare him unpleasantness with his mother because of me. I believe his mother genuinely cares for him to consider so much. Can you understand?”
Freya’s mind was in turmoil as she faced with such a scenario. She wasn’t sure what decision she’d make. From Luna’s standpoint, she had her reasons. Freya couldn’t label Luna as unreasonable. But decisions made in the name of love for Orion, were they genuinely the best?
Freya felt Orion’s personal choices would serve him best. Yet, she was an outsider. She couldn’t unilaterally inform Orion Russo.
“Well, I understand. I won’t tell Brother-in-law. You two need to resolve this yourselves.”
Luna said, “There’s nothing to resolve now. When Orion moves past this, it’ll pass.”
“What about you?” Freya knew Luna still harbored affection for Orion.
“I’ll move on too. In the future, when I find someone suitable, I’ll try to connect, marry, and lead a simple, ordinary life.”
She and Orion Russo were incompatible.
Listening to Luna, Freya considered the disparity between herself and Elijah. Her determination to divorce deepened. After all, she and Elijah were too dissimilar.
“How’s Kai?” Freya changed the subject.
“We’ll end the call, and I’ll send you a video.” Luna said.
“Luna, I don’t know how to console you…” Freya bit her lip.
“I’m fine.”
“This is my number, save it. Contact me anytime if you need anything.” Freya urged.
“Okay.”
After their conversation, they hung up.
Luna forwarded a video of Kai. In just a few days, the little baby had gained weight. Freya gazed at the screen with tender eyes. She yearned to hold him. Yet, she knew she couldn’t go there now, feeling desolate.
…
Headence Group.
Ronan energetically arrived at the company to deliver the painting. However, he spotted Elijah and Mr Wolfe negotiating a collaboration.
Mr Wolfe was initially set to collaborate with him. He’d invested time and effort. Now, Elijah had seized the opportunity.
Suddenly, the extortion from Elijah lost its appeal. As the successful collaboration promised billions in profit. Now, Ronan surmised that Elijah had agreed to spend lavishly because of this collaboration.
“Mr Vega,” Xander approached. “Mr Silverton instructed me to collect the painting.”
Ronan was displeased. “Payment first!”
Xander insisted on inspecting the painting. Reluctantly, Ronan handed it over for examination. After verifying its authenticity, Xander led him to the finance department. Then Ronan crumbled.
“What does Elijah mean?!”
