Ranita saw Jedidiah getting angry and immediately tried to calm him down. “Brother, don’t be mad! He just brought me back, I didn’t go out with him!”

“You’re still defending him!” Jedidiah got even angrier. “Either shut up or go home!”

Brendon frowned. “Mr. Bowman, I told you not to take it out on her.”

Jedidiah initially wanted to talk to Brendon, but seeing how furious he was, he decided to head home instead.

“What’s going on?” Jedidiah stopped in the garden, unable to contain his anger as he questioned Ranita. “Didn’t Mom say she arranged a blind date for you? Why did you come back with him?”

“You didn’t skip the blind date, did you?” Jedidiah frowned. “If Mom finds out, how are you going to explain it?”

Ranita quickly explained, “Brother, I went to the bar! I met Leon! It was just a coincidence that I ran into Brendon, and he brought me back!”

“Brother… please don’t tell Mom, okay?” After a pause, Ranita added, “I’ll talk to Mom myself.”

Jedidiah pursed his lips. “Fine, but be mindful of Mom’s feelings. She…”

“Why are you two still out here and not inside?” At that moment, Alexia’s voice came through. “Ranita? You’re back? Weren’t you out with friends? Wasn’t it fun? Why are you back so soon?”

Alexia had wanted Ranita to have a good time at the bar with Leon, but she came back early.

Ranita drank more than half a cup, feeling the heat and alcohol dissipate before she spoke. “Mom, I… actually wanted to tell you not to set me up with anyone anymore.”

Alexia looked at her without saying anything.

“Mom, I… actually have someone I like.” Ranita didn’t make it too clear, but Alexia guessed some of it. Her expression darkened and she said sadly, “Do you still like that Brendon?”

“Mom… I…” Ranita didn’t know how to respond. She didn’t want to hurt Alexia’s feelings, but she also didn’t want to upset Brendon.

“Ranita, do you really have to like him?” Alexia asked sternly.

“I…” It wasn’t that she had to like him; she only liked him. She had only ever liked Brendon.

“Ranita, from a mother’s perspective, I don’t want you to marry so far away. I hope you can stay in Steland so we can help if anything happens.”

“Also, when Lena came to our door that day, I felt so embarrassed! All this trouble over a man.”

Alexia sighed and took Ranita’s hand. “I just want you to be happy.”

Alexia said painfully, “I know it’s wrong for me to stop you, but your father and I really want you to be happy.”
