Upon hearing Weston’s recount, Austin thought Weston’s mental fortitude was not strong enough.

Austin himself had received many criticisms.

Whenever his nana thought his food tasted terrible, she would tell him to redo it over and over again.

There was once when he failed to satisfy her with her favorite dish even after ten attempts. In the end, Grandma May gave up on eating it.

He did not find it traumatic but reflected on his shortcomings instead. It made him realize that the food he made was not as delicious as he had imagined.

The constant experimentation and improvement had shaped him into who he was that day.

Since Austin was not close to Weston, and they were competitors, he did not say much and remained a listener.

He listened as Weston described how much time he took to recover from the shock Ms. O’Connor’s comment had caused.

Weston said, “At my second interview, Ms. O’Connor had already become the head of the family. She’s truly an amazing young girl. She was able to gain control of the family business even though she was surrounded by many people who harbored ill intentions.

“I did not have much hope during my second interview compared to the first, where I thought of myself as someone with the best cooking skills in the world.

“The second interview, I spent a lot of effort. Hence, the first round was a breeze. The second round only commenced a few days later. There were too many applicants, so quite a number managed to

proceed to the second round as well.

“We had to adopt a queue system because Ms. O’Connor was busy with work. She didn’t have time to return home for meals every day. That was why the second stage went on for much longer. I was the first to be called up for it.

“Back then, I thought my cooking skills had significantly improved after years of practice and that I could surely pass the second stage as well. Alas, I put the wrong seasoning in one of my dishes. I mistook sugar for salt… Needless to say, I failed again.”

Weston laughed self-deprecatingly. “I made that rookie mistake because I was too nervous.

“I heard Ms. O’Connor had eaten some of my food. Although it was not satisfactory, at least she ate it.

“However, regardless of the reason behind my mistake, Ms. O’Connor couldn’t ever accept someone who committed a rookie mistake.”

Austin asked, “Did someone switch your seasonings?

“Many people wish to be the O’Connors’ private chef. Scheming among competitors likely occurred frequently.”

Austin knew the working society was filled with deception.

Someone could have switched Weston’s seasonings during his turn.

“That’s impossible,” said Weston firmly.

O’Connor family also prepares the ingredients and seasonings we use.

“Their employees won’t switch the seasonings or help any applicant. They wouldn’t dare. If they are discovered, Ms. O’Connor will fire them without hesitation. No one working there would willingly give up on the excellent benefits and salary provided by the O’Connors.”

Austin replied, “You’re right. I overlooked that. Maybe it wasn’t the right time for you to work for the O’Connors yet.”

“I failed in the past due to personal reasons. This time, I’m more confident in myself. I hope I’ll be able to succeed this time. What about you, Mr. York? Why did you decide to be the O’Connors’ chef? You’re still so young. You can work in a famous hotel or even start your own business.”

Weston wanted the job for the money and reputation.

Austin smiled and said, “It’s challenging. Don’t you think this is a job that makes us feel challenged, Mr. Abbot?

“Since I’m still young, starting a business can wait. I heard being the O’Connors’ chef is challenging, so I thought it was also a good opportunity to put my cooking skills to the test.
