The Apple of My Eye

Chapter 2067 Visitors

Chapter 2067 Visitors

Isla kept throwing a barrage of persistent questions. "We've been friends for a long time, Sheryl, and From NôvelDrama.Org.

we both know I'm more stubborn than you. I won't stop asking until you tell me," she paused for a

moment before continuing, "What happened between you and Charles? I saw him and Melissa just

now. They looked so anxious about you."

Sheryl avoided her eyes and simply shook her head silently. Even she didn't know what had happened.

Everything that happened just seemed to confuse her even more. She remembered how Charles had

come running into the hotel room to save her. Did that mean he still had feelings for her?

But then he still lived with Vicky. Sheryl didn't understand the motives behind his actions. Just what did

he want to do? What was he thinking?

These conflicting thoughts whirled inside her head, entangling into a mass of confusion that she

couldn't find her way out of. Tightening her knuckles, she struggled to control herself. "Maybe... maybe,

he's afraid of dragging the reputation of the Shining Company down. After all, I was his wife, and I'm

still his children's mother," she said to Isla.

Isla saw the logic behind her words. It wouldn't be a far-fetched possibility. "You might be right. It seems

that you owe him one this time," she replied.

Her eyes trailed over her friend's hunched form. She looked tired. Sheryl didn't look into her eyes, but

she knew the turmoil she would find in them. In a softer voice, she added, "You can't forget Charles,

can you?"

Her response was quick. "No." Almost too quick. "It's not that. I don't even like him anymore." Raising a

hand, Sheryl touched Isla's back. It was her own problem. She didn't want Isla to worry about her.

"Are you sure?" Isla asked again, this time looking into Sheryl's eyes.

Sheryl nodded firmly, hoping it would be enough to convince Isla.

Isla wanted to press her further, to make her talk and ask her more questions, but she looked at her

friend's pale skin, shadows under her eyes and on her cheeks as if her strength itself was receding. All

words died on her throat. She bit her lips and remained silent.

All of a sudden, the door opened to reveal an anxious-looking Cassie. She was chasing her breath as

she stood in front of the ward, her eyes shifting from one woman to the other. At once, she began to

relax, her shoulders sagging forward in relief.

"Sher, are you alright? I was so scared. I thought something was wrong when I read the news. Nick

knows. He's on the way to the hospital right now. What happened?" Cassie threw another slew of

questions as soon as she got in. She frowned and regarded Sheryl warily, silently inspecting her from

head to toe for bruises.

Her expression turned to worry as she looked at her.

Isla remained silent, waiting for Sheryl to explain.

Sheryl felt uncomfortable as two pairs of eyes stared fixedly at her. The seconds grew heavier as the

silence stretched. Unable to bear it any longer and left with no other choice, she sighed. "I am fine.

Don't worry about the news. You should tell Nick that I'm alright. There is no reason he should be

coming here."

"Sher, you know he won't listen." Cassie looked at Sheryl helplessly.

Nick cared about Sheryl very much. They all knew it.

In truth, Sheryl had always felt grateful and fortunate for this. She wasn't Nick's sister, but he treated

her as his own.

"All right. Let him come then," she conceded.

It was still work hours, so Cassie couldn't stay for long. After making sure Sheryl was alright, she left to

go back to work. Isla stayed with Sheryl.

Time passed peacefully, and Isla began to feel the tug of sleep. She and Aron had attended a business

meeting until late last night. In the quiet of the ward, her fatigue had caught up to her. Soon enough,

she was dozing off.

Isla was already sleeping when Nick rushed into the ward, but she didn't stir.

Sheryl gestured for Nick to lower his voice as soon as she saw him. Pointing to Isla, she said, "Be

quiet. She fell asleep just now."

Nick nodded and came closer to take Sheryl's hands in his own. "Sher, how do you feel?' he asked, his

voice nervous.

If he could find that bastard, Damian, he would surely beat him up.

Sheryl couldn't help but smile at Nick's expression. "Nick, don't look so scared. I'm okay," she assured

him.

"Did Damian hurt you?" he asked, his face grim. Nick had learned about what had happened on the

way to hospital, but he wasn't convinced. He had to see for himself that Sheryl was alright.

"No. If he were a bad person, he would have already hurt me abroad when he had the chance," she

answered. Sheryl didn't really intend to cover up for Damian. It was strange, but she didn't have solid

proof that would lead to the people who drugged her. So she kept quiet for now.

"Sher, tell me truth. Are you really fine?" Nick asked again. His eyes bore into hers as if he was on

guard for the smallest of lies. He didn't want Sheryl to say things just so she wouldn't worry him.

Squeezing his hand, Sheryl replied, "Really, I'm fine. You can ask the doctor. Plus, Cassie came to see

me just now, and she's a nurse. If there was something wrong with me, she would have already told

you." Sheryl was calm as she spoke, not wanting to agitate Nick any further.

At this, Nick visibly relaxed, his body letting go of the earlier tension. He sank back into the chair and

did not say any more, intending to stay with Sheryl all afternoon.

However, she stopped him. She cleared her throat and said, "Nick, you can go back to work. Isla and

Cassie will stay with me. I'll be fine. Don't worry."

"Sher, I..."

"I know that you're worried about me," she cut him off abruptly. "But I'm fine now. I'd feel worse if I kept

you from doing your work. If there is something wrong, I will tell Cassie to call you immediately."

Sheryl's face was firm as she looked at him.

Nick had known Sheryl for a long time, and he knew that there was no room for negotiation in the

matter. He yielded with a sigh. "Alright. I'll leave now. But if there is something wrong, please let me

know at once. Promise me."

"Okay. I promise. Don't worry." Sheryl smiled.

Nick felt his worry evaporate at the sight.

"All right. Then, I'll be going now." After bidding goodbye, Nick stepped out of the ward.

The first thing he saw as he went out was the sight of Charles.

He was someone who had caused Sheryl pain, but Nick chose to be polite.

"Hello, Mr. Lu," Nick said formally, calling the other man's attention. There was something he wanted to

say to him.

"How is she?" Charles knew that Nick had come here to see Sheryl, and he had purposefully waited for

him. He needed to know if she was alright, but he couldn't possibly go inside her ward.

"She is fine. Are you sure that Damian drugged her?" Nick asked. He wanted to find the culprit and pay

them back in full for hurting Sheryl.

"I can't find Damian. I don't know all the details, but one thing is for sure–that man had something to do

with whatever happened last night."

He spoke calmly, but Nick could feel the waves of his anger flow out from his words. "Mr. Lu, it is

important to find him now. If you do something to Damian, Sher would not be happy about it," Nick said.

Nick hoped that Charles would understand what he meant.

"I see," Charles replied. "Please take care of Sher." After this, he turned back to leave.

"Mr. Lu, please wait a moment." Nick stopped him. There was one more thing he wanted to know.

"Is there anything else?" Charles turned back and asked.

Nick hesitated for a while but decided to go on. "Is it true? That you and Sheryl divorced?"

A moment of silence passed before Charles answered, "Yes." There was no denying it. It was written

down as fact.

"Then," Nick said, clenching his fists, "Please stay away from Sheryl now. If you always appear in front

of her, all you'll be doing is to make things more difficult for her." He was not afraid of angering the man

in front of him. Not after what he had just learned.

"I know what I should do. You should just focus on taking good care of her." Charles answered back, a

dark look on his face. Without another word, he turned and left the hospital.
